I’m wondering if anyone has found it necessary to have a fuel surge tank on the 3x8 cars... how much fuel must be in the tanks to prevent cutting out during hard turns?

I am asking because I have noticed my fuel gauge going up during long right hand turns and down during long left hand turns. I am going to fabricate one another car that does need one and am considering making two if it would make any noticeable difference.

    Thanks - Chris

    Chris,

On the track i have at most 1/4 to 1/8 tank of gas before the 20 to 30 minute track session and have never experienced a pickup problem. Base the starting gas qty by which track and the session length. The swinging gas needle is normal due to the position of the fuel meter sensing unit.

As Steve says it is just due to the sender in the LH tank, as the fuel travels in the crossover tube it will vary...you can travel farther if making a LH turn! ;)

So... until experience dictates otherwise I won’t modify the fuel system. The baffling images in the manual seems to be well placed, and its nice to have the pickup at the rear of the tank.

I probably should have phrased my fuel sender statement more clearly. I was meaning to indicate that gas does move fairly rapidly between tanks and, thereby, I was wondering [in my head] at what fuel level the left tank starts to run dry during right hand turns.

Depends on how hard you are turning :) (and how long sustained) combined with the fuel level. Never figured it out as only judge REAL fuel level while on a flat road going straight for public road driving, or in the pits before the next track run session.

When going through hard turning twisties on the track i CAN say the gas gauge can go from reading empty with light on to 1/2+ tank easily.

I guess with carb cars the float bowls act as mini surge tanks. I filled the tank with ~1.5 gallons the other day and took it out. I did not have any starvation problems! When I install EFI I'll test it again...
