Enjoy the Music (Elvis Costello "She" right now),

"She may be the face I can't forget
The trace of pleasure or regret
Maybe my treasure or the prize I have to pay
She may be the song that summer sings
    Maybe the children autumn brings
    Maybe a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day

She may be the beauty or the beast
Maybe the famine or the feast
May turn each day into a Heaven or a Hell
She may be the mirror of my dreams
A smile reflected in a stream
She may not be what she may seem
    Inside her shell...."

I think I like this kind better than the later all black plastic ones. (See attached pix). I understand that early production 308 GT4s, and many of the early classic Ferraris used this style fuel filler cap.

I just finished molding a new rubber grip ring to replace the old split one.

If any of you have this older style & want a replacement grip ring, send eMAIL to:
    [email protected]
    SUBJ:Gas Cap Grip Ring

These new rings are molded out of flexible, very high abrasion resistance Polyurethane, so they're a lot tougher than the original rubber. Hardness Shore A 80 (similar to that used for polyurethane bushings). It's a close match to the original rubber, but slightly softer. Most likely the original material was about this soft when it was new.

    BTW,
A knowledgable source informed me that this style fuel filler cap was used on the 365 and 246 Ferraries.

I replaced the gas cap on my 75 gt4 with a Stant (#10655) locking cap. Comes with 2 keys is easy to install and I get peace of mind (thieves/vandals). I keep the original for shows. The locking cap has listed the bertone x1/9 as it's application. Fits the Dino perfectly.

I just received my restored fuel filler cap. Verell's reproduction of the plastic grip ring is flawless. He captured every detail on the original ring including tooling and identification marks.

These OEM caps for the late 60s and early 70s Ferraris are hard to come by in intact condition as the plastic ring tends to shrink, distort and finally split (see attached picture). I guess that's why this part was superceded by the all plastc covered cap.

Thank you again, Verell, for helping me maintain my car's originality.

Just a clarification to answer a customer's question:

The split in the ring pictured in #40 & #38 occurred in use.

You should not need to cut the old ring to get it off unless it’s glued on & mineral spirits doesn’t loosen it.

The open end has 4 small flanges bent outward that keep the ring on.
Usually you just take a small (~1/4” or 3/8” wide blade) spatula or flat blade screwdriver and pry the old ring off starting at the cap’s open end. Of course, the old ring may be so hard & brittle that it splits while being pried off.

The new ring just slips on starting with the cap's top and has grooves inside it's bottom edges for the flanges. . It’s a snug fit, so a little lubricant or dish detergent will help.

Yes, you can use the one from Fiat or Lancia. But if you really want an exact cap, the one fron the Lancia Betas, 1981/82

Is that the same as the Alfa as was posted earlier in the thread?

    ====
International Auto Parts carries a Alfa Romeo gas cap that appears to have the exact dimensions of the 308/328 gas cap. Looks identical too.

    http://www.international-auto.com/pdf_files/IAP12.pdf

part number 13011 60mm gas cap

    ====

Do you happen to have a part number for the Fiat or the Lancia?
