308 Gear Box Rebuild - Help?

    I am in the middle of a full rebuild on my 79 308 engine. The gearbox was having trouble in 1st and 2nd gear, I have decided to replace the synchros on all 5 since I have the engine completely stripped. The parts have been purchased at this stage (nice bill for original ZF parts!)

    Apart from doing the necessary to seperate the gearbox from the Crank I have not started to strip the gearbox yet.

    The Manual I think is close to useless, the drawings are not really much help!

    Does anyone have or know where to get a better guide to rebuilding a 308 gearbox?

    Or is there anyone out there who has gone through the process that I could email/ call during the process.

    I am based in Ireland, but international calls would not be an issue.

    Which manual are you referring too? The 308qv-328 workshop manual?

    Any 3x8 parts catalog will help you a lot. The WSM will still be needed for bearing preload, etc of course. You can download from:

    Ah ha thanks guys, just followed the link, the 328 manual is a lot better! and the parts book definitely is a lot better at showing how things go together in the gear box!

    Any rebuild experience out there?, what are the gotchas! in dismantle and rebuild?

    What are the things you need to look out for that the manual does not tell you

    I rebuilt mine and I can help if you need I also have a few spare parts that may help since I turned 2 gear boxes into one. The main problem I experienced was that the 1st gear blocking ring is harder than the 1st gear and this caused the 1st gear to wear. You need to place the new blocking ring on the gear (do this for each ring and gear) press the blocking ring against the gear (ring over gear mating the cone surfaces) if it has enough friction to hold the gear then it's okay but you also need to make sure that there is a small space between the blocking ring and gear. If not then the gear is worn out and won’t shift correctly.

    I am in the process of rebuilding my 308 ger box but cannot seem to get the gear trains to drop down so I can replace the syncros. Would appreciate some help here. Thanks
