My clutch cable snapped a couple weeks ago and to get me home a Ford dealer cinched it together, but needed to mess with the clutch lever adjustment to get additional slack.

I've since replaced the clutch cable. But I wasn't able to get the 43mm adjustment on the lever. Not even close. the car has 66K on it and I suspect the original clutch.

Last week I started having trouble downshifting from 5th to 4th: the gears would grind. Double-clutching didn't help. But if I wait 2-3 seconds between gears, it goes in smooth as silk. 4th to 3rd objected once or twice, but that just may have been my apprehension with the clutch pedal.

I'll check/replace the trans fluid shortly, but it was changed less than a year ago. Earlier threads mention tired syncros. Thoughts?

I would first verify that your clutch is properly adjusted. Next change the trans fluid - I use Redline 75-90 NS. If you need to go into the trans, my thoughts and prayers go out to you. I just did the engine/trans on my 308QV. With doing most of the work myself, I'm somewhere on the wrong side of $11K. I replaces all the syncos, all bearings, nuts, and the 4th gear cluster - about $4500 in trans parts. Then your are faced with the "while I'm at it" dilemma. After all, the engine is already on the floor, and why not freshen it up a bit – new rings, bearings, water pump rebuild, .. of course, since the heads are off, new guides, seals, etc.. And let's not forget all those old rubber hoses that should be replaced. It just goes on and on…

As I mentioned before, you might first want to recheck the clutch.

I decided to try a new local Ferrari mechanic.
after you take our BSing out, in about a half-hour he re-adjusted the clutch.
We dropped the trans oil to check for "chunks". Shavings, but small & not too bad. Refilled with my SwepCo instead of his AGIP. I've been wanting to Swepco for a while.

Needless to say, to more gnashing of gears. I didn't yet notice a posative difference in shifting with the Swepco, but Life is good.

That is until I decided since luck was with me I'd pull the drivers lock/tumblers for a locksmith to re-pin as the key was having trouble locking the drivers door. Passenger lock was no problem. Pulled the tumblers, cleaned all the 20+ year grease gook that was caked on it with WD-40. Then found out when it sparkled that I had no more locking problem :)

    Life is getting better

But this weekend my exterior door handle got very loose all of a sudden. While I had the door apart I took a look. Dang cable was on all but one thread. There's no way I could push this off for another day. The cable looked suspiciously like a bicycle cable. off to the local bike shop where for $2.00 I picked up an identicle cable. 2 hours later and the door is back together.

Lost a day, but saved a bundle!
I have my car for this weekend! Life is Grand!

That's great Clyde; glad it all worked out. After having the clutch cable snap you deserved a break or two. Is that fluid available locally or did you buy it elsewhere?

I bought a case (smallest amount - 6 gals) of Swepco from a distributor who shipped it to me.

LOL, my choke cable is also a bicycle cable. I had to get a rear derailleur tandem cable because it was the only one long enough.

I could not agree more, if you wait with the clutch dipped for a few seconds, and then get a smooth shift, it sounds like you are giving a dragging clutch plate time to slow down so you can engage the gears.
Dont spend a penny on anything else until you have the clutch adjustment right.
