Anybody care to help with the removal of the gearbox from the engine on my 308? I have removed what appears to be every bolt and it has separated from the engine about a 1/16". Seems to be hanging on the lower portion, and I don't want to crank on it. I also have removed the clutch linkage. What else do I need to do? Do I have to remove the drive gears on the most rearward part of the case also? HELP!!

To remove the engine from the gear box, you need to remove the following:

Transfer gear case cover, and lower ringnut, bearing and gear.
    Remove bellhousing.
    Remove clutch and flywheel.
Remove adaptor plate(this plate is what the rear main seal fits into)
Remove all nuts fronm pan rails of engine and below crank pully. Don't forget the ones that are inside the trans and oil sump.
Make sure dip stick tube is not still attached to timing cover.
Lift engine straight up. You will have to wiggle the engine around gently so the oil pick-up tube will clear the baffel inside the sump. Sometime it has to be removed if it's being uncopperative.

This can be a little tricky somtimes. Be sure that the large adaptor plate gasket is not holing you up. Sometimes you need to cut it at the spot were the trans and engine meet.

Be sure that the engine comes up level. If not it will bind up on the studs, and be really frustrating to remove. Sometimes you need to use some wood wedges to keep things straight. Use a fair sized screw driver to help with the lifting of the engine off the trans.

If the oil pan is off, all the nuts around the perimeter off, clutch housing, clutch, transfer gears, dip stick tube inside oil pan etc. the block should separate from the trans. It will hang, however on the various studs. The fit is quite precise, so if you do not lift the engine nice and flat, it will hang on the trans.
I lifted the whole thing (after I knew I had separated the two parts) just a tiny bit over my bench and started prying with a wooden wedge in between the opening but also under the trans (between the bench and the trans) to see if I would get some idea of which side was heavy and thus hanging.
It took a while but prying and studying the balance I was able to slowly lower the trans almost all the way away from the engine.
It is hard to describe but there is no need to remove anything from the rear most part of the trans.
The pictures are not very good but may help some.

Thanks a lot guys, that helps a lot. I think I am there and just need to do a bit more wiggling and jiggling, just didn't want to bust something I wasn't thinking of. I'll let you know in a day or two if I won the battle or not.

Hey I got it! Turns out it was kinda hanging up on one of the roll pins on the clutch linkage side. Lots of WD40 and some wiggling and tapping and finally it came loose. Thanks again.
