    Hi There!
I am fitting a new AC compressor, does anyone know what oil I should fill it with? It is bone dry inside.. Or will it fill when the ac system is charged?
    Regards

    Nick

Depends on refrigerant used and the type of compressor.

Sorry I didnt know the 308 GT4 had different compressors.. Its a York style, and what ever the refrigerant the local garage will charge it with

Should i put some oil in the sump of the compressor as a precaution?

it needs special fridge oil- the people charging the system will know the correct oil. The old system would have used Freon 12 but not available anymore. There are drop in replacements and they will have a suitable oil. Do you know what gas was in it previously ? The later Mondials could be converted to R143 I think, so the GT4 is probably the same. but they had to change some of the hoses as they were not suitable for F12. Best you check what gas was in it before and find out the history before you have an expensive cock up. Ask about the hoses suitability for the replacement gas etc

Original oil was Agip TER 54 or Suniso G4. Neither of these are available, but there is a modern equivalent. If you're still using R12, or have an R12 drop-in replacement such as R437 or R437a, then Suniso 4GS is correct.
Quantity is 330 cm3 (20.13 cuin). Depth of lubricant should be 38-40mm from the bottom of the sump (needs a bent dipstick). York also recommend Zerice S-68 or Zerol 150 or their modern equivalent. These are mineral oils.
If you've converted to R134a with all the o-rings that that entails, then you need a Polyol Ester (P.O.E.) or Polyalkelene glycol (P.A.G.).
Suniso SL32 is a fully synthetic compressor premium POE oil with a viscosity of 5.8 cSt at 100 degC. This is almost identical to the G4 which is 5.9 cSt at 100 degC. The benefit of the fully synthetic oil is that a 40 degC, its viscosity is 32 cSt, rather than 55 cSt.

I had a right game getting the AC up and running.. I had none of the brackets, or pulleys. I managed to source all the required bits from across ebay, The top bracket was a QV one and needed some work to fit perfectly. 2 of the hole lined up with the cambelt cover but the top hole had to be opened up a bit.
When finished i took it to my local Merc garage who plugged it into a AC charger, my Dino was on the list so they just selected my car and hit enter.
The 40 year old system maintained a great vacuum and then they recharged it...

I now have ice cold air in the car.
