Hi I let my car (308 GT4 1975) alone in the garage during 10 days and today impossible to start her : the benzine pump is OK so I think the battery is OK but when turning on the key I cannot start. What could be the reason ? Alternator ? Thanks in advance Olivier
yes the lights are OK and there is the normal noise of the gas pump when I turn to the first position. The problem comes afterwards when I turn the key to the second position... I must say the garage is very cold nowadays and I think it does not help for the car the start. Olivier
How old is the battery? Does it need a charge? How cold is "cold"? Here in Ontario Canada even one night at -20C (around-10F) will stop an old battery.
I'd wager battery as well, my two 308GTBs were hard starting, running poorly. New battery and it fired right up and ran great! Get a little heater for that garage, as well!
A battery can have enough strength to operate the fuel pump, but not turn the car over. Bad battery is my guess, but have an electrical system check to rule out the alternator as a problem.
Possibly be a battery problem,or maybe even a sticking startermotor solenoid?? It happens By memory, the clock, dashlights, fuel pump can operate with around 5volts of battery voltage. To wind the engine over, you need around 9volts of battery juice. Maybe get a mulitmeter across the battery terminals and see what the battery voltage is,then with a helper.try and crank the engine over and check battery voltage again while cranking? The cold weather can cause funny **** to happen alright! Let us know how you go bunji. Cheers!
Must definitely be the battery : last week I succeedeed in starting it with a "booster" but today, impossible again to start it ! I will change the battery tomorrow. But what kind of battery is necessary for a 1975 308 GT4 ? Thanks in advance for any advice Olivier
I'm sorry I only have the NAPA part # here.....I left the old Bosch unit out at the Ranch...THAT"s the number you'd be likely to find, over in your country! Anyone else help?
Be careful starting it via booster cables as the alternator will struggle to charge the old battery, possibly damaging the charging system of the car.....
This has been discussed...I think heat is the killer. How hot does a GT4 run in the engine bay? My car is surprisingly cool considering. I would think you could charge the battery okay with the alternator if you don't make a habit out of it. Ken
sounds like the problem i had, lights and fuel pump would prime but no starter noise. turned out to be the soleniod was burned. new starter fixed it. the battery was still good in my case. to check the starter take a volt meter + lead to the white wire running to the soleniod, leave the wire connected and have abuddy try to start the car, if the volts are under 12 then it's the battery, if the volts are 12 or better then the soleniod is no good.
They put it in a great location, bottom front of engine, it's protected from splashing water by being located on top of the front bank asbestos wrapped exhaust header........LOL!
Seems to be definitely the battery. I went to see the car and tried to start it with a battery linked to its and it started. When I stopped the contact, impossible to start it again and even the lights had some difficulties to open/close... Will change it as soon as possible and will tell you the end (?) of the story... All the best from France Olivier
"They put it in a great location, bottom front of engine, it's protected from splashing water by being located on top of the front bank asbestos wrapped exhaust header........LOL!" Bubba - are you talking about a 308GT4??
Problem solved : it was just the battery : super start now ! Alternator's charge checked :it's OK ! Ready to drive again ! Thanks fr all Olivier
Get a battery tender and plug it in, during winter months.. Sorry, yes I have two 1977 308GTBs....#22127 (yellow) and #22641 (blue).
