Hi everyone,I am in the process of recommissioning the GT4 after a couple of years in hiding when I decided to refresh my memory as to a previous posting on the old forum, it relates to a problem with the driveshaft flanges still being wobbly when the fixing bolt is tightened.
At the time I concluded that the back edge had become burred and was moving back to far (only by a few thou) but this was enough to cause the clamping washer to tighten solely on the shaft,I got over this by having a recessed washer made that allowed clamping of the outside whilst clearing the middle, this cured the problem.
After all this time and studying the pic in the manual I was wondering if anybody knows whether the end of the splined shaft is supposed to be perfectly in line with aluminium flange because unless it is (or slightly proud) I cannot see how the washer is supposed to clamp. My solution definately works but im a little concerned that there is meant to be a slight wobble??????? which I have now eliminated,I would be greatly in debt to the person who knows exactly how this setup is supposed to work.

    Regards
    Gareth

    Hi
you definitely don't want a lot of wobble. However I noticed on my car that although the shaft was recessed a little (and thus the washer could clamp it, there was a some slight movement. I think this is just the bearing on the differential allowing some movement. I was told not to worry about it if there was only a small movement. If you are leaking oil there, then it is definitely too much :)

Mine wobbled as well. In looking into it I was advised that the splines wear which allows the flange to wobble even though the bolt is tight. If a washer were holding it ridgid, I would assume it would flex under load, even though it wont by hand.

But upon disassembly, I found that the splines on mine were tight, but the side gear to differential carrier clearance had become excessive. Simply swapping them side to side elleviated 95% of the play. However, there are no bearings or bushings between the side gears and the carrier, just hardened steel to hardened steel facing.
