Hi all. I'm in the middle of an engine out project to sort the gearbox 2nd gear issue and also head work to ditch the sodium valves. Whilst the engines out I'm trying to refurbish the engine bay and have removed that old silver foam on the firewall. Above the foam either side of the right bonnet hinge are 2 cream coloured 'plugs' that have nothing in them but have clearly been there since new as firewall is built around them. Does anyone else have these and what do they do? I've checked loads of enginebay photos and can't see them on anyone else's. Photos attached show location. I'm going to feel silly when you tell me, but I've stared at them too long now and can't work it out. I don’t recall seeing them on my car. Only through-holes into rear seat area I remember are for rear seat headrests, choke cable, parking brake cable and electric aerial coax and wiring. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Nothing like that on my car either. The OP's first photo shows the headrest bolts between the yellow arrow and the hinge so the "plugs" in question have nothing to do with his headrest bolts. What intrigues me is the plugged hole to the right side of the car is in the center of a circular reinforcement plate, anyone have that plate?
Nope. Almost looks like reinforcements for seat belt mounting bolts. Would be the right location for the top mount for 3-point belts. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Thanks so much for all your replies and suggestions. So as mentioned above, they are not headrest bolt locations, and I can account for all the other items you listed that come through the firewall. However, on further inspection from inside the cabin, I notice the holes are equidistant from the left and right side on the rear headrest when looked at square on. I have annotated an image I grabbed online to show where from inside. One is located on the angled section near the rear window. Nothing appears to have ever been mounted in those positions on the inside as the vinyl is unmarked. My car being a RHD, means these holes are only on the drivers side. The car has standard rear seat belt mount points in the usual places, so its not for that. Perhaps they are holes to allow the mounting of a racing 5 point harness, allowing belts to be attached to the bulkhead for the driver. If so, they seem too high and the firewall is way too weak and flimsy to trust as a mount point. Either way, I think for my engine bay restoration, based on your comments and lack of apparent use, I will just 'delete' them and cover up. The less holes we have into the engine bay the better. Thanks again. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It’s been raced in a previous life with a suitable bracket , now removed for the drivers harness .The interior likely removed , then after racing put back masking the harness bracket holes .
