I'm considering replacing my front seats. What options would you suggest? I use the back seat, so they would need to fold forward. So far I've found a few options but nothing jumps out at me. The first two are the Momo Street Racer GT seats and the OMP Style seats. Does Ferrari typically make their own seats, or do the contract them out (and if contracted, to who)? Thanks, Chris
Two reasons. First, I need to modify the seat mounts to increase my available headroom (I do not necessarily want to cut / modify the original seats). Second, I would like some increased support for auto-x / track days as I currently slide around in the stock seats. I'm not 100% certain I will be getting different seats, but I want to entertain options and prices. Also, I would be interested to see pictures of other seats used in the GT4.
Thats it Hans, either your ex girlfriend is short,or you"re one tall brother and I just noticed that she's wearing heels as well!
Driver height can be generally used to determine fit, but there are several other factors as well. In short, my head is within 1/4" of the ceiling without helmet and significantly reclined. For my helmet to barely touch the ceiling, I would need to recline as far as possible, schedule a chiropractor appointment and lean toward the center of the car. @Speedmade - I would prefer seats without "harness holes" so the Classic Car Seats seem like a valid option. Other suggestions? -Chris
I understand now,I'm not that tall myself,178cm or just shy of six foot and when I took my GT4 to the track, wearing the helmet was a royal pain.
Did Ferrari contract their seat design in the 70s and 80s? Or did they do their own seat design / fabrication?
In the GT4 the seat runners are mounted on raised mounts that stick up out of the floor. On my car a PO has lowered the drivers seat mount by about 60mm. It doesn't really notice but it gives a load more head room with a helmet on. Have a look.
I'm 6'2" and always had my head rubbing against the head liner. I removed the seat and cut the seat back portion of the seat mounting rail all the way down to the frame. I don't have pics handy, but the effort did lower the back of the seat about an inch and half. Keep in mind that the seat is at a slightly steeper incline (the front of the seat is at the same height, the rear is lower) from the front to the rear of the seat. The cuts were easy to make with a dremel (you will go through a number of blades) or an air powered cutter (much faster). The left over material can be used to spot weld the missing side of the front seat mounts.
Good luck finding a seat that is actually closer to the floor than a 308 seat. I couldn't find one. These seat are already the lowest I could find.
@newto308 - that sounds like my answer. I'll take some measurements and check it out. @twright - I need the seated position to be closer to the floor which I can achieve by modifying the mounts. I'm also looking for greater lateral support from the seats. I have a source for some older Recaros that have roughly the same bottom clearance but fit me substantially better... but they do not seem to go well with the car's styling. I have found after more picture browsing, my seats may just be particularly worn. Perhaps some foam replacement is in order and would give me the support I seek.
If your seats are beat a skilled upholstery shop could recover them and at the same time take new foam and build up a little more bolstering and lumbar.
It seems I may have offended with my JC post. It was supposed to be a comment on the pic of Hans standing next to his car, I hit reply and not quote. All on jest of course. If a mod wants to edit it please do. Sorry.
IF, and I say IF you replace your fronts, I WANT the old ones, particularly if they are Crema. I have nothing but a milk crate. John in Ft. Laud.
How's your headroom? My seats are black... and if I do change them, I will keep the original set with the car. I'm currently planning to rework the stock seats. Lower the seat mounts as much as possible and re-foam them for better side support. -Chris
