    All,

I had one of my inner high beam (ferrari calls them main beam) headlight went out. I thought they were not sealed beams after looking at the Parts Manual, but after looking at the 75 owners manual and taking it apart I found sealed beams. I have a few questions as I have only changed the parking and marker lights which were the same as my old 75 pinto!

Are halogen lights hotter? I ask this as there is a plastic surround around the headlights and I think that if the lamp was hot enough it would melt. The owners manual says the high beam is a 12V 37.5 watt bulb and the dipped beam (outside light) is 37.5/60 watts.

    The originals say
    high beam:

    TUNG-SOL
    12V
    5001
    DOTH74
    J4

    low beam:

    TUNG-SOL
    12V
    4000
    K4

Now here is weird part at several paerts stores there are Sylvania 5000 series for the high beam and a Sylvania 6000 series for the dipped beam and they seem to have the sam prongs, but they say SLYVANIA HALOGEN on the front which looks kind of tacky. So what have some of you done? No where do they say 37.5 watts and the 5000 series seems to be similar to the 5001 marking on my lamp but what is the descrepancy of the 4000 I have compared to the 6000 series at the store?

I know this sounds kind of dumb but I want to clean up and replace all the bulbs, but would like the original look and dont want them too hot. More light would be cool but I can only imagine what the plastic replacement surround would cost if It melts......

Thanks for your advice. If you guys have any reccomendations or sources I am open to suggestions!

    Rob

Hi Rob, did you ever find an answer to your headlight question? What did you end up replacing your headlights with?

    A.J.,

I’m sorry to say it’s been so long. I can’t remember but I’m sure I just replaced them with whatever I could get. I have a €74 which actually uses replaceable elements with semi permanent glass lenses! I don’t drive the car much at night between the headlights and the dash light's it’s not all that bright but if you come up with a solution, I’d be interested.

    Hi Rob,
My car is a ‘75 308 GT4 with US specifications and has the sealed beam headlights with three-prong connectors. I bought a set of the new carello type lenses but I can’t find the bulbs for the high and low beams that have three-prongs to fit the electrical connections that are currently on the car.

Do you know of any options to make this work with the current connectors or where I can find sealed beam replacements?

    Thanks,

    Avi

The Tung-sol lights predate Halogen lights and are horrible by today's standards. They have tungsten filaments like old light bulbs. To me safety and visibility are more important than OEM looks if you drive at night. Back before LEDs, the best set up was halogens. A better vision alternative would be if you can upgrade to LED bulbs on a halogen light. The reflector will be somewhat off but the lighting difference will be dramatically better and power demand much lower. Choose an LED bulb with a Kelvin of 6000-6500. It will work well.

I haven't looked at my GT4 but I would think that the bulbs on the outside positions would be 3 prong (low beam, high beam, ground) and the inner positions would be 2 prongs (high beam, ground). That was the "normal" wiring for US cars starting in 1958 when it became legal to have 4 headlights as opposed to only 2 headlights. Having 4 headlights was a big deal (styling and prestige) back then. Look at any US car 1957 vs. 1958, they all jumped on the bandwagon.

I've had great luck with NINEO and AUXITO LED's off Amazon. H4 LED bulbs draw less than half the amps of traditional H4's and provide far more light with less heat.
