Hi guys, Over the past few weeks, the indicators of my GT4 have started to play up a bit. On occasions, they would not work. This has gradually worsened to 75% non-functioning. Flipping the warning lights switch (all 4 indicators blipping at the same time) works just fine, it's just when I operate them with the stalk that they play up. My initial response was to check the fuses. No issues there (I have Sam Saprunoff's new blade-type fuse blocks). Second thought: the relay. Sanity check: does this make sense? Thanks Hans
I don't have a wiring diagram in front of me right now, but when my car intermittent signal issues it was the hazard light switch wiring. Apparently all of the turn signal wiring runs through that switch. The PO replaced the switch before I bought the car as part of pre-purchase fixes so I don't have many details.
The LH and RH sides are well-separated electrically after the column switch so if both sides are giving trouble about the same amount of time, I'd focus on the turn signal switch itself or upstream (which includes the hazard light switch -- although, if your hazard lights work perfectly every time, that's a good sign that it probably isn't part of the problem). If it's only one side giving trouble then, I'd be more suspicious of the fuseblock(s), the switch itself, and/or downstream wiring. So please clarify which side and how often for each side. Also, if you try one direction, and it doesn't work when it should, try immediately switching to the other direction and report whether that side never works, always works, sometimes works, etc.. If you mean the flasher relay, I'd say very, very unlikely -- the hazard lights and the turn signals use the exact same flasher relay (in the same way) so, if it works perfectly with the hazard lights, it's doubtful that it's causing the turn signal trouble IMO. With no other data, I'd put the greatest likelihood on the turn signal switch contacts, but clarify per above -- and does it ever start working if you wiggle the stalk or reswitch it off then back on? Hi Steve, It's exactly the same for both sides. If one side fails, the other side goes with it. Indeed, the hazard lights DO work perfectly. Fuses seem normal too. Initially, I had the feeling that using the hazard lights briefly would "cure" the non-functioning of the indicator lights. Unfortunately, as things got worse, this didn't work any more either. So... what am I looking at? Still the switch itsef. Sounds complicated! Do you have a link to Verell's thread? Thanks! Hans
Then the trouble has to be somewhere in the common +12V supply that starts at the battery and ends at the center pole of the turn signal switch itself. The hazard switch (when switched off) has active contacts in this +12V path -- so its working well when switched "on" is not a guarentee that is works properly when switched "off" (but it never hurts to try cycling this a few more times a few days apart to see if has any effect at all -- even if it has no effect-- that's useful to know). My advice would be to trace the wires going to the turn signal switch and make some voltage measurements on these three wires relative to ground as close as possible to the switch in the two "on" modes when not working -- should reveal the bad player. I can't recall if this can be done at the instrument connections or if the fusebox(es) is(are) the only place to measure with minimal effort. And if this can't be done easily, and you've got the ring-nut socket, might be easiest to just check/clean the switch physically in situ -- I'm hoping my mind is reassigning synapses (rather than losing them ), but I'm really having trouble remembering some of the 308 details (it's not like I'm seeing them all the time like the pros). Could still be the switch itself. Here one of Verell's good ones (where I got the jpeg): http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21548 But there's more information sprinkled about in other threads that have other imbedded links -- try a search on: "308 turn signal switch"
Thanks Steve, good info. I'll get on it. And dc, I don't think it's the grounds as a) they still work as hazard lights and b) all lights go at the same time. However, I'll keep the ground option in mind, thanks! Hans
funny, my turn signals work perfectly, but my hazards will not work at all. i am suspecting the hazard switch itself.
Hans, my turn signal switch was giving me problems especially when trying to get a left signal. Intermitant. I bought some electrical contact cleaner, sprayed it into the the switch, it situ, and worked the switch up and down. The switch works like new. Some here have concerns that the contact cleaner may be harmful to the plastics in the switch so that is something you should be aware of and resolve for yourself. Good luck.
There's other threads that covers this but take a look at the power feed to the indicators from your hazard switch (I think its the same as GTB/GTS) - probably have to replace the switch
