Here are some pictures of my 78 GT4 in bits.. I am doing the tappets, as all the exhaust gaps are well over size (inlets are all OK), Replacing the tired distributor and rebuilding the carbs. I am also going to spruce the engine up. The cam covers are being powder coated red and the air box black. All the hoses have been cosmetically enhanced with fake brading and look cool. it's fun at this point to give the inside surface of the air horns a good polish...worth .0000001 hp but it looks soooo cool before you hide them from the world.
Be sure you replace all the fuel lines at this point. The cloth-covered lines between the carbs in your first pic is the OEM line, which is 30 years old and I GUARANTEE it is cracked under the cloth. It is a fire hazard. Replacing the lines will make the car smell less and it's easy to do when the carbs are off. Replace all the lines from the tank to the pump to the carbs and the overflow line back to the tank, as well as the vent lines across the tops of the tanks. It will cost you about $20 in rubber fuel line from NAPA and give a huge margin of safety over the original lines which are an accident waiting to happen right now. Birdman
Hey Nick, While you have that thing open, can you take a picture of the distributor end of the rear bank exhaust cam? I'm curious about the section that is pinned on to the cam to drive the distributor. Thanks! Birdman
That thing my friend is a pulley. Our wonderful EPA decided the engine needed air injection at idle speeds to make the air slightly cleaner while all these Ferraris idled around. Doesnt do a whole bunch once you punch it. My MB 380SL has a air pump too, only with an electric clutch so it shuts off after the motor is warm and or off idle. But on the 308, as you can see, the rear cam drives the pump. Imagine what happens when the airpump locks up. It stops the cam!
Birdman - Good point, I will! Here are the latest pics - all reassembled, and sounds awesome! 5 exhaust tappet gaps were .005mm too large so they have all been reshimed, and what a difference. I have rebuilt the distributor; I have not changed the points as I am replacing the whole ignition next month with a programmable ECU version from Superformance. The carbs have all been cleaned and rebuilt - The cam covers and airbox etc.. have all been wrinkle painted red and black, I also made the cool oil filler cap with the PH logo ;-) What do you think? That looks amazingly good! Makes me want to go start tearing mine down this morning, but 1) I wouldn't know how or where to start, and (more importantly, 2) the summer driving season is just getting started for me!!! Looks fantastic - really. Thanks for sharing those pics.
Thanks, I'm really pleased with the way its all turned out. Just got to connect the carbs up, wait until it stops raining, and I too might be able to drive it.... Can't wait ;-)
