Hi Guys, I have a RHD 1974 car #8834 and I'm trying to repair some of the damage that previous owners have done to the wiring system over the years, particularly to the headlight systems.. I'm struggling to trace a few wires that don't seem to go anywhere. The first are a series of four wires that are tucked up under the right hand side of the instruments where the fog lights / fan switches are. I know that some cars have a second row that contains a wipe speed control which mine doesn't have. Could these wires be for that? Image Unavailable, Please Login
The next issue is that there appears to be two looms emanating from around about the centre of the car under the front panel. The first of these is relatively short, maybe 14 inches or 400mm. Two shorter wires are both orange with a lightly coloured grey twisted trace that is very faint. The two longer include another of these orange with faint twisted grey trace, and a heavy black. All of them were just dangling into the spare wheel well. Image Unavailable, Please Login
The next are quite a bit longer, and have a lead off them that is longer again. They come out from under the brake booster but go nowhere. The shorter three are an orange, a blue and a grey. The grey is then doubled at the plug and feeds back into a separately shielded loom with a black and a grey. This is long enough to go a considerable distance from the first three so may cross the car. My car has no AC fitted and I'm wondering if either of these looms may be for AC wiring in a car fitted with AC? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The only pink wire I can see on my US 75 above the boot handle looks like it possibly goes to the fuel gauge
This is what my panel from 12842 (RHD) looks like. Red/Pink look like they are Fog. Do you have the wiring diagram? It's a bit hard to read but you should be able to trace the colours from that. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I second the recommendation to look at the wiring diagram in the owners manual as it gives your the colours and wire purpose - so may be able to cross ref colours and figure it out. Also, section L of the workshop manual has some info on wiring harnesses / colours etc...
Thanks Patrick and Ian. I've been going cross eyed trying to follow the lines of the wiring diagram and yes the fogs are on a red wire, but my fogs are working and there are too many. Patricks picture shows two connections, appears to be one wire in (power from relay) and two wires off the switch (two lights). But I have four and none are twin wire?
I see 3 reds and 1 pink in your photo - if it's fog then it could be the two reds to the lamps and one to the warning light? From your photo of the car it looks like the fog lamps have been replaced so wonder if the wiring is new? I'm just guessing really.
Good thoughts Patrick. Yes, the fogs have been replaced by previous owner with some sort of driving lamp and I've traced one wire coming into the front compartment as a replacement to the fog switch, but then stops and nothing goes to the lights. So that was also on the 'work through' list. Beautiful sunny day here in Oz this morning so I'll head out and scope those four wires. I expect to have a power source from the relay on one (maybe the one that is taped up) and then should have continuity to the red fog light wire at the front of the car from at least two of the other three. As you say, then there is the lamp. These are the days when you neeed to have 9 foot arms to be able to trace wires from under the dash to the front bumper!
Short two wires together (or one to ground) and measure for continuity between them at the other end (tip from a short-arse).
Go here: http://www.ferrari308gtbi.com/ Buy the wiring diagrams. They're quite good, well worth the $.
Thanks Patrick. You were spot on. Previous owner had by passed all the fog light wiring, so I've gone through it all and reconnected so those ones are now sorted. Now I need to understand that mess in the front trunk section that all appear to go nowhere?
I have a black and white large scale version of the GT4 wiring diagram, but the legend must be on another page as I have no way to name the numbered components. Could anybody please post up a scan of the legend for the wiring diagram. It should show wire colours and names of the numbered components. Thanks guys.
Not trying to be unkind, but unless I'm mistaken, I posted a link directly to a source where you can purchase the schematic from the artist who created it. It's $25, I believe. So instead of asking those of us who have purchased the files to post images here, either buy them yourself or use the old Ferrari manual.
Yes, and thanks for posting the link. But a little story. I've been working on another damn Italian for four weeks now trying to sort out a similar wiring issue due to a number of previous owners being lost in there. So far I've purchased five wiring diagrams and been given / downloaded another six. Not one of them, including the two owners workshop manuals that I've also purchased have the same colours in the looms as the actual car. Now I don't know if it's due to being an Aussie car, or a year issue, or it's just because it's a Fiat 124 Sports Coupe which are pretty rare in the USA where most of the wiring diagrams available represent a 124 Spider as they were more common. So far I've had to make a new drawing and combine three drawings and still change a few wire colours to create one drawing to represent the 1973 Aussie spec model which; when completed' will be made available to the Fiat Club of Australia and anybody else that asks for it. Now, I have a 13mb file for the Aussie 308GT4 which so far appears to be pretty accurate, but unfortunately it's missing the legend and the colours of the wires are in Italian, but again, not described accurately enough. The coloured drawings by Paul look fantastic, but will they suit my car? A very early spec GT4 Dino, before they even landed in the USA. Unfortunately Paul doesnt have a heavily watermarked version for free download where you can at least check compatibility. If that were the case and the diagram corresponded accurately with the car, then it's worth the money. $40 Australian is well worth it to save the headaches.
I had a FIAT 124 Sport Coupe many years ago and whenever I went to a FIAT dealer to buy parts they only had the microfiche's for the AC and CC models whereas mine was a BC (1608cc). It used to drop oil from the distributor on the exhaust manifold. Wish I still had it.
Here's mine Patrick. 1800 with Lancia injection and a small turbocharger. Hence the myriad of wiring, mostly done by mechanics and fools. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks Mike. She's a fun little package. But as par normal, what started out to be a quick fix to get the intermittent wipers working on the stalk has turned into a dash wiring loom rebuild. And the 308 started out to replace a blown headlight globe. In the process of getting to the globe, I had to remove the headlight buckets only to find that there was barely anything left. Old man rust had been in there and disintegrated everything. 2 months of work later, folding sheetmetal and welding new buckets very carefully so as not to damage the red paint on the top, and now the rebuilt buckets are ready to go in, but now to tidy up an old loom that a previous owner had put in with extra relays to 'boost' the headlights, a damaged stalk switch, and these few extra wires left dangling in the front trunk. Talk about growing arms and legs. Bloody Italian cars!! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
