I am a first time Ferrari buyer and need a 4 "seater". I know the choices are limited and like the 308 GT4 1975 and up. Any advice or thoughts? Any known mechanical/body or regional issues to consider. My budget is up to 25K.

    Thanks for your input.

    Hi John,

Lots of info here on the GT4's if you do a search of the archives.

Do you have the Forza 308 GT4 buyer's guide issue? I believe there is a scaned in copy of it somewhere on the internet if you do a search.

Can you please fill out your profile, so we know stuff like where you are? If you are in SoCal, you are welcome to come by Crystal Cove one Sat morning, so you can check out my car. If you are in california, you may want to note that due to recent legistlation, the 1975 model is the only model that is smog-exempt. All later models will need to be smogged.

Mechanical issues are the same as other 308's. Make sure you get a service history to enusure the car has been regularly maintained, and a pre-purchase inspection of any car you are considering.

Watch out for rust, it seems the italians didn't discover rust proofing until the mid-80's.

    Hope this helps for now.

pay particular attention to the state of the exhaust system as these are notoriously expensive to replace as most of these do when they get this old.

Also check the suspension, another expensive replacement as you need to do this properly or the results will either make you love or hate the handling of the car, eg, my car had worn shocks and rubber/bushings, several thousand $$s to replace but the improvement was chalk and cheese.

Check that all the underbody panels are there and that the car hasn't been bottomed out too much. Also check the condition of the cooling system AND INSIST on taking the car into a traffic situation as this will quickly tell you many things about the car, like is the water pump working properly, the fans should come on as the temp rises above 195 I think and both fans should come on with the A/C on. The cooling system took me 2 years and lots of $$s to sort and in the end the thing that REALLY fixed it was a new radiator cap!! The cheapest fix on the car!!

Important to have a leakdown test to let you know the state of the engine.
