    Hi all,

I've used the search function but couldn't find a clear answer.

The rear bumper on my euro 308 GTB needs to be replaced. Unfortunately I can't see how it's attached to the car. The exhaust tips are in the way to have a clear view. If possible I would like to replace the bumper without removing the exhaust.
I can feel my way around the cut outs in the bottom of the bumper itself (see arrow in picture). I think there's a large bolt that needs unscrewed. Is that all? Thanks.

    Best regards, Peter

    Hi Peter,

You are correct, just the two bolts you've outlined will do the trick..13mm from memory. The whole bumper will then slide back on the mounts.

    Regards,

    Carl.

    Thanks Carl for the confirmation!

(please ignore the exhaust. I know it's not original and the cut out in the lower valance is a bit crude but that will be fixed when it's getting a bare metal repaint. Undecided on the exhaust yet. Might replace it with a Superformance exhaust).

The rear is much like the front. Spend a few minutes under the front to visualize the pipe with the T bracket. Euro is one fixed piece whereas US is like a shock absorber. Two large studs are imbedded into the bumper. Find the nuts/locking washer and remove. You may need help if the Euro bumper is heavy as the US. Wish I could help about access, I think that varies greatly with the exhaust installed.

The euro-bumpers are really very light.

Once you have the bolts out, you may find (likely) that it still won't move. It's a pipe-in-a-pipe set-up, with the bolt as a clamping device, and the fitting is quite tight, which may nevessitate some force.
When replacing, put some copper-grease or something like that on the parts, to facilitate future removal without a headache.

    As mentioned, nice colour!

    Hi Carl,

There are small cracks, dents, bad paint touch-ups and discolourisations all over the body (as well as stone chips and some rust on the doors). Also it turns out that this is not the original colour, which is Blu Dino metallizzato (now it's probably Blu Sera).

Depending on how close to the body the bumper was clamped (it can slide in and out a little) you won't be able to loosen the 2 nuts either side of the supports, and your only option is the central vertical bolt, accessible from the slot in the bottom of the bumper itself.
    I think I used a mini-ratchet for the purpose.

Also, when you start pulling the bumper off, keep it parallel to the body, otherwise it'll lock on the supports.

I thought it would be helpful to share my experiences with removing the rear bumper. Removing the bumper turned out to be quite easy once I found the right tool. With a regular spanner I wasn't able to reach the vertical bolts and with a ratchet tool the exhaust tips were in the way. Luckily I had another L-shaped tool with suitable socket that fitted perfectly.

All the bolts were easy to undo. When I removed the nuts on the T-shaped connectors they didn't budge so I had to use some WD-40 to prie them loose.

I've cleaned the T-shaped connectors and all the bolts, nuts and washers as good as possible. Had to use a hobby tool to get the foam off the connectors.

If anyone's interested I have measured the parts (original Euro version):

    - T-shape connector tube is 7.5 cm long and diameter is 2.5 cm
    - hole in tube sits 3 cm from the top of the tube
    - T-shape plate measures 13 by 3 cm
    - length of the shafts of the vertical placed bolts: approx. 18 mm
    - tubes on car are 11 cm long and are 84 cm apart from eachother. They have a slot in them so I guess you could move the bumper inwards and outwards (about 3 cm). The T-shape tube has a thread welded in (see picture).

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards, Peter

Used this old thread to find out how to undo the bolts that hold the bumper in place. Photo's really helpful. My bumper was slightly out of alignment but thanks to the info I was able to undo the bolts and get the bumper to line up perfectly. Another niggly job done. Thanks.

Hi. Any chance you might have a picture on the tool used, ie "Luckily I had another L-shaped tool with suitable socket that fitted perfectly.". I know it is long time ago... Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Sure is a long time ago! I probably used the tool pictured (with 13mm socket next to it). Sockets can be attached both sides and it's less bulky than a ratchet. Today I'dd probably use a ratchet with an extension for the socket. Don't know where I got this tool, I've had it for a very long time.

How did you access these 4 hexagon nuts without removing the "diaper" covering the muffler??? Did you remove the rubber flange above the bumper itself?
    Well done anyway!
    thanks
