I have searched the archives but I am still confused....
I have my door panels off to install new speakers and would like to lubricate the window mechanism. My windows work well but I might as well lubricate them since the panels are off. I read one should use medium grease and sylicon spray but were exactly do you apply it? On the cable, pulleys, or somewhere else? For the record, I have no interest in redoing the the whole mechanism as it seems like a bear of a job!

One more question.....the passenger window switch does not work. I can still control the window through the drivers side switch. Should I assume that a new switch should cure the problem? Are these available for a reasonable amount? Where?

    Thanks in advance my friends.

I used white lithium grease on the spool, but if you don't want to take it apart, just coat the cable w/ it and move the window up and down as you add more. Should coat the whole cable that way.

I've seen new window switches for our early 308s on EBay, through T.Rutlands. Not cheap. Before you drop the cash on a new one, try cleaning the old one. Mine worked when I bought the car, but were really gunked up. I cleaned them out and they work even better now.

    Good luck,

    Greg

Lube each of the platic rollers that the cables run on, if you have time remove them 1 by 1 and clean them in a solvent as they can have grease which has turned hard with age on the roller shaft, almost acts like glue on them!. You are right the window mechanism is a dog to get right so don't remove it unless you have real problems.

Regarding the switch, could be as simple as a bad connection under the switch, I would check that first before forking out for a new one. The contacts can get cruddy and no current passes through.

While your in there, clean the electrical connections w a good contact cleaner solution/spray. Also, clean all of the contacts from the switches to the motors. Just doing that made a significant difference in window speed on my old QV.

    IMHO,
you're going to find that most of your problem is the old grease in the cable drive spool mechanism(aka window regulator). Unless you've got a jammed pulley, there just isn't enough resistance in the rest of the cable system to cause problems.

One thing that might help is spraying the window guide tracks & rubber sealant with silicone lubricant. Just be sure to keep it off of the glass as it's hard to remove.

amen to verell. i did my windows a few years ago. the grease in the drive rollers was much tougher (and stiffer) than any epoxy i can get in the local hardware store. you can try the spray and pray but i think the definitive fix requires removing the drives and cleaning them. it did not turn out to be the worse job on the car by any means. regards, jon s.

It is not a huge job although it requires a measure of patience.
But if the grease in the 'drive spool' has gone rock hard no amount of lubricating the guides etc is going to make a blind bit of difference. The process has been documented on this website and is available elsewhere too.

From start to finish it should take a few hours each door.

I really dont see any old grease in my window rollers....I guess thats why they work rather well for a Ferrari. Especially the drivers side......I even got a complement once on how fast I can get it up! :)

Just take it apart and clean the contacts. See http://www.parrotbyte.com/kbc/ferrari/308/WindowSwitches.htm for more information.

    Regards, Kerry

PS, new ones are available through UK Ferrari and probably Rutlands.

The only item that I lubricated was the actual 'spooler' mechanism itself - after I had removed all the old hardened goo.
I didn't touch the guides, rollers etc - they were bone dry but seemed happy enough.

...it was at this point that the thread spiralled out of control :D
