I need your thoughts about the 308 GTBi. Seems like its the less powerful 308 of them all. Does it sounds the same as the other 308s?
I have one of the 2v's that many consider to be the "weakling". I've also driven a carbed 308 and 308GT4, 308 QV, and a 328. If you eliminate cosmetics and upgrades due to better technology in later models and just consider the overall car, you won't notice very much in performace. At least I didn't. There are suttle differences in the cars that I noticed but to be honest, to the average guy I don't think its that big of a deal. The 328 I drove was a piece of crap due to neglect, so is it still superior to my whimpy 2v just because its a 328? If you are just starting out as I was 2 years ago with a limited budget, it is smart to purchase the 2v car at a lower price. OK...the others have a few more horses. "La day freaking da"! Unless you live in Europe where you can drive 140mph what do those horses get you? Many Fchatters on here have seen and driven my car and will attest to it being a nice ride. I'll keep my little 2v and the money I saved will do well in the bank. I mean no offense to my friends on here who have some really nice cars. Some of you have the cleanest examples there are and I drool over some of the engine compartment photos. I have never had one of them look down at me or my 2v. We all love the looks and sounds of ALL the 3x8's. You asked how do they sound? Here's a link to a thread where I upgraded to a tubi exhaust a few months ago which has some sound videos for comparison. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=253713&highlight=tubi+exhaust
My first Ferrari was a 1981 308 GTBi. I still have it and I'm in no hurry to sell it. It sounds just like any other injected 308. Mine has an Ansa sport exhaust on it with cat delete. There were only 494 308 GTBis made from 1980 to 1982, so it's a pretty rare car, if that's important to you? Yes, it has the least HP rating of all the 308s but I don't really notice it when I'm driving. ( I did get smoked by a turbo honda some kid was driving, but he probably would have smoked the 328 too) I did buy a 328 GTS a few years back and it is somewhat faster, but for all practical purposes the 308 GTBi is fine. Neither of these are fast cars by todays standards. Test drive one and you be the judge.
I also have a 2v 308,who say's you have to own a 4v.Back in the 80s I had a 246GT only 190HP it had 2v carbed Damn! what a fun car to drive! I get that same feeling driving my slow 2v GTSI.Only difference the 308 is quieter.
Yeah, its a few horses different, but the difference may be is the car going to take 6.5 or 7.0 seconds to get you to sixty miles an hour. If you are buying for the performance, prepare to be let down. I have a Trans Am that will stomp all over my 308 QV in a straight line, acceleration, etc... But ask which one looks better? sounds better? attracts the attention? Then you decide.. PDG
Great car. The 2Vi's are my favorite Keep in mind that a QV cannot outrun a late model 4 door Buick stoplight to stoplight now. Sorry. Sad but true. The 2V and the 4V are the same car below 100 and in 12 years of ownership I have hardly ever kept the gas to the floor enough over 100 to be glad I have the extra couple of valves in mine. You buy the 308 because you want a 308. Ignore the performance numbers. Want a fast car - go buy a Corvette.
Just do what I did, get a 308 and a Vette! Have the best of both worlds. I love both of them for different reasons and consider myself the luckiest guy in the world to have them and an understanding wife too.
If you have found a great car, I wouldn't shy away from it. But if I were searching for a 308 now, I would probably look for a 1976-77 carbureted car, mostly for the engine soundtrack. If you want an injected car for driveability, I would recommend a 328, especially if emissions testing makes a Euro car off limits. The injected cars sound more or less the same to me, still excellent compared to "normal" cars.
I love this car! Its not a drag racer, but the style is unbeatable and I can do all of the service in my garage. Plenty fast, classic, and sounds great. Mike in Denver Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wow Mike, Wish "my" engine was that clean and detailed. Very nice. Joe Image Unavailable, Please Login
Like others have said, forget about performance distinctions between 308, 328, carb 308, 2V, etc. None are particularly fast - I have both 3.2QV and 308GTSi in the garage and they're the same.....fairly slow. But, they're all beautiful from early 308 to late 328. Personally, I like the early 308 looks with the 2V injection for driveability ('80-'82) - I really don't want to monkey with webers although I'm very capable with webers. 308 carbs guys say that you get the carbs set up and they stay in tune - that's true if the carbs on your particular 308 haven't been tinkered with, and destroyed, by a bunch of hacks over the last 30 years (pretty common). The Bosch 2V CIS injection isn't very sophisticated, but it is pretty reliable if you keep the fuel clean. So, jump in and get a 308 and see what everyone is talking about!
thanks for all the responses. i'll go check a 308 GTBi and if it looks good to me, i'll get a ferrari mechanic to have it check for me. Thanks!!!
IMHO: They're better than great. The performance is all the same. If you're on the track, you won't see any difference. 328, 308, 2v,4v, carbs, injected on and on. They're all the same. Well tuned of course. Neglected are pretty much all the same as well. They all look like they're going 100+ sitting still in the driveway, but a Subaru WRX etc etc. I love my 2vi, and I love my carb car. If I feel the need for some astronaut training experience, I'll borrow my friends race Honda motorcycle. I just drove my carb car today after sitting for months. It fired right up and was a blast! The tires were flat spotted, but that went away after some miles. The injected car is more civilized and always runs perfect. It can get me more tickets than my insurance company will allow
