This is my 1979 308 GTS that I purchased 10 months ago. I am a perfectionist and wanted the car to look new as it was in 1979, I was a person who loved the show Magnum PI when I was 18 and wanted the car to look brand new as the first episodes. I gave the 308 a full back to bare metal re spray and I was very excited that all the original undercoat was still on every panel showing it had never been in an accident and no rust. I replaced glass and all the rubbers and badges to look new. With the glass out I had leather fitted to the dash and the rear coverings and I fitted new carpet. The seats and sides still look new so I didn’t have to touch them. The car is Australian delivered and only 47k on the clock with all book, and the last owner had spent a lot of money on all the hosing and rubbers under the car. I then fitted new exhaust manifolds and a new exhaust, and at the same time I fitted a new air compressor, I don’t believe how long it took me to replace the manifolds because of having to take the petrol tank out and every other thing around it. I fitted a new master brake cylinder and this really stops the car now. I have fitted new springs to get the car to the right height, and fitted new 16inch rims with Pirelli P7’s that look very good because they have a square look to them bringing it in line with the wheel arches.
I will talk about what I did with the motor another day.

Great work! The engine bay looks really nice, too.

Interesting to see on the right hand drive cars that the engine lid release is switched to the right side door jamb. Makes sense, of course, just never thought about it before.

Wait a second and looking at your interior photos--- are the ashtray and shifter positions switched, too?

And the choke, heater controls switched as well? Ferrari went to a lot of trouble for you RHD drivers!

    Thanks for your kind words,
I must admit every day I wake up the first thing I think of is this car, I do love it.
Have I got a name for it? I haven't thought of that.
I took a lot of photos of all the work I did to this car and I did all the work myself except painting and fitting the leather to the dash, but of course I removed and fitted the dash. I will add more threads with photos to help people trying to do this work.

By the way the steering wheel is a genuine Nardi dated 1980 and looks brand new.

That's about the best front end height I've seen. Most lower too much IMO. What was the drop? Half inch? What springs did you use?

Better have a second look at the cigarette lighter then.

And maybe the brake vacuum hose :)

But seriously, it's nice to see a carburettor GTS in decent condition, hard to find good examples in Australia, despite them being plentiful. Well done.

May I ask the chassis and build number please?

Are you saying the cigarette lighter is not the original?

    Peter,

Your 308 should have the chrome ringed lighter with the central access hole, I'll try and dig up a pic. So to answer your question, the lighter in your car is not original as in, the original type. Of course, if you replace it, it won't be the original one either, but it will be the original type :)
