I have a friend who has a lead on an '84 Alfa Thema 308 engine. The same one as the 308 cars. He is looking for a 308 body so he can install it. What or where would be a good place or source (other than Ebay) to get these salvage body 308's. Thx!

The Thema was a Lancia not an Alfa. I'm not sure what the specific differences are between the Lancia Thema 8.32 and Ferrari 308 engine are but I do know the HP was lower..

I read that one of those Lancias had a 90 degree crank instead of a flat crank--that could be one of the differences resulting in lower horsepower. It will not rev as high as a Ferrari engine, but it will probably sound better--more like a conventional V8.

    Good day,

I remember asking them on a price for this car...if memory serves me, it was in the $20's ($25K springs to mind). However, this was sometime ago and now they may be more aggressive on pricing.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Mark328 is exactly correct - the Thema 8 3.2 has the ninety degree crank instead of the unique Ferrari flat crank of the 308/328. This reduces the horsepower by about 20hp, however, the Thema is a smoother running engine (for the same reason) and sounds more like a conventional V-8 (again, same reason). You'll likely have to mess with engine mounts and induction at a minimum.

    it's actually 8.32... meaning 8 cyl, 32 valve

And it's very different. It has the 90 deg offset crank, but that's not the problem for putting in a 308...

It has a front wheel drive layout, with a gearbox off to one side, the block and heads are completely different, the cambelt drive arrangemnt is completely different.... the inlet and exhaust fixtures are very different etc etc

You're actually no better off with a Thema engine than you are with any alternative power unit...

I'd rather have a Thema with the correct engine, than a 308 with a thema engine.. many times over.

In fact, the best gadget on a production car I ever saw is the rear wing on a thema... controlled by a column twist stalk... it disappears and looks like a closed sunroof when down, and pops up when activated.... great gadget

Phil, I know the cam covers are embossed "Lancia by Ferrari" but were these engines actually built by Ferrari (ie in the factory) or were they another example of Ferrari technical-advice-only input?

I'm not sure of the specifics. I did a belt and valve clearance service on one back in mid 90's... great car. drove it for a weekend... the wing not only looks good, it works... turning it on as you drive can really make a difference.

    I'd have one.

    Are there any in OZ??

Not sure about whole Themas but there's a guy runs a home-built open wheeler with the 8.32 engine at events like Leyburn. Irks me a bit as he promotes it as 'Ferrari powered' and has big Scuderia shield stickers - like you I'd prefer an honest (excellent) Lancia.

I remember reading somewhere that these Ferrari 328 derived engines were assembled by Ducati.

    They're not 328. they're 308 QV. Just 3 litre only. 8 cyl, 32 valve.
