Hi to all. I'll start with a little bit of history. A couple of years ago the turn signal cancel started working sporadically and then it stopped working all together. I thought maybe the cancellation nubs had broken off but I could still cancel the turn signals manually so no biggie. Then a few months ago the horn stopped working. I thought these two issues were unrelated. Did some troubleshooting of the horn circuit with the help of my wiring diagram and found that everything was good right up to the connector at the base of the steering column. I had power at the connector but not at the horn button. So I remove the steering wheel and found that the cancellation ring was in pretty good shape and none of the nubs were broken but it seemed like it wasn't pushed in all the way. After a good cleaning and lube I reassembled and everything worked fine. On my first test drive the signal cancelled no problem and the horn worked but, only for the first 5 minutes or so and then both failed again. Cancellation ring out of position??? Why???
So my question is....what actually holds the cancellation ring in position? I thought it should click into position (which it doesn't seem to do) but maybe the steering wheel hub keeps it where it should be. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are supposed to be 3 tabs on the top of of the hub that keep the turn cancel ring in place(see picture below). In your bottom picture the tab is broken off & most likely the other 2 are also. I see 1 to 2 switches with this problem/year.

I haven't come up with a good way of replacing the tabs, but do have a work-around:
Put a ~2mm (3/32") cross-section o-ring on each of the turn cancel ring posts. The steering wheel hub will then press the turn cancel ring down into place. In some cases a 2nd o-ring on each post is necessary, but try 1 o-ring 1st as you don't want to put too much pressure on the turn cancel ring & break it.

    Good Luck!!

Hi Verell, thanks for the reply. So looking at the tabs a little closer in some other photos it appears that they are still in place but maybe a bit worn. So to get this straight, the o-rings are to be inserted in the holes located in the back side of the steering wheel hub? I was planing on cutting a couple of round pieces of plastic and sticking them in the holes as spacers. Do you think this would work or should I stick with the o-rings?

I select the O-rings so that they are a slightly snug fit AROUND the posts on top of the turn cancel ring. The posts fit into the holes in the hub. The o-rings don't go up into the holes, but let the hub apply down pressure on the turn cancel ring.

Not sure about using a hard plastic. There can be slight miss-alignment between the ring & the hub. You want something with a little give so you don't break the fragile turn cancel ring.
