    Hey guys
I think this has been covered before but I can't find the thread. I need to remove the interior rear view mirror from its base without removing the base from the windshield (or doing any other damage). Its a 1978 GTS US with original mirror. It seems to me I read the mirror and base just snap together but I don't want to start yanking on it and screw something up. I've read you can also twist them off as well as push the mirror straight up parallel to the windshield to release it but that may have been from something other than a 308. The reason I want to take it off is I'm planning on installing clear Nano Ceramic film on the inside of the windshield in order to reduce cabin heat and it will be a lot easier if I can get the mirror separated from it's base.

    Thanks in advance
    Barry

The referenced thread describes removing the mirror base from the windshield which is not what I want to do. I just want to separate the mirror from its base leaving the base on the windshield.

Here's a thread on replacing the glass and/mirror:
Mirror (parrotbyte.com) It has the following picture that shows how the mirror clips into the base on the windshield.

Mine popped off then I hit it with my head, thus breaking the front glass.

Please be very careful when removing the mirror from its base, I was doing the opposite where I was snapping the mirror back on its base and suddenly I heard a click and that click happened to be a two inches hairline crack on my windshield. Long story short, I got new windshield installed now. So this is what I did, I cut a notch between the the base and the mirror so next time I can just use a small flat screwdriver and twist it to remove the mirror from its base, better than holding the mirror itself and trying to snap it off the base with the extra leverage which is more risky. Thanks guys.
I've heard of cracking the windshield and definitely don't want that. I'm thinking now rather then tempt fate by trying to remove and reinstall the mirror I'll just cut the film so I can install it with the mirror in place.
