Congrats on carb 308 purchase. If u plan to do it yourself a search of past posts will provide u with step by step procedure, source of special tools, and pics. Bill
thanks for the replies on the belt change. Right now my car is in 100 pieces and getting ready for paint. Will post photos when complete.
OH!! He went for it! Don't be shy. Before and after pics are mandatory or else we will find you and do it ourselves!
Ok, here are the B4 shots. I appologize for the poor quality. I also have on going restoration shots taken by the paint shop which I will post later if interested. The photos don't do it any justice. The car is a mess inside and out. The painter was quite disgusted on the poor quality of the paint job as I bought it. You get what you pay for. However, he is quite exited about doing the restoration and sez he "wants to make love to the paint". Gotta love his attitude, but I don't want to watch. I am changing the hood louvers to red and the other black parts will go matte. There seems to be a glitch, my files fit the criteria but the upload file is failing. I'll try again later
Cold weather has prompted me to take my 1979 308 GTS apart and prepare it for paint, engine work and interior cosmetics. Thought I'd post a few pics. Rust on rear quarter, both doors had some bubbling on the bottom. Rust has been completely cut out and "butt" welding using very minimal bondo. I'm going to paint the black hood louvers red and all the other black parts matte. The bumper struts will be shortened to draw in the bumpers closer to the body. Since the rear wheels and inner fender are removed, might as well change the belts and tensioner bearings. I can't upload any photos!!! All of my images meet the max file size criteria. I'll have to email the web site nerds for help.

Larry, Email one of the pics to me and I'll figure out why it won't let you post them. jbird AT oceanicresearch DOT org Birdman

Larry, Apparently they uploaded fine for me. I didn't change a thing on them, just uploaded them exactly as you sent them, same file name and everything. When you say it won't let you upload them, what specifically is it doing? Birdman
I press the reply to thread window. Press the "attach Files" Manage Attachments button. Press browse. Go to my pictures file. Select a photo. Press the upload button. Wait for about 20 seconds and an upload error is displayed, naming my attachment and sez "upload failed".
I will be the dissenter. Pull the motor. If your going to redo the paint and go to all the trouble to make the car look really good, spend the 5 hours or so it takes and yank the motor out. Then you can detail the engine compartment, pull the tanks and replace all the hose and AC lines, replace the axle boots, etc.... You can clean the motor up really good, and its also much easier to work on. And then after you drop it back in and have it painted you will have a very beautiful and desirable car.
you are absolutely right. It will make my maintenance schedule so much easier. The honey do list can wait. ps I see you also own an 83 MB 380 SL. I also have the same year & model in blue with gray interior
what a mess. More pics to come of rust work repair. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Rare to see Daytona seats in the 3X8 series! Nice! ReOriginals can supply exact new ones if required........ You should register at Factory site and see if they can confirm those and color...........
Thanks for the info on the seats. I will check to see how rare that style is on a 308. The seats just came back from the tailor. He did a beautiful job . The threads on part of a seam let go on the driver's side. Worn red highlights were replaced. The red stripes are vinyl by the way. There is no signs of real wear on the leather as the car only has 21500 miles. Other remarks: Rust on rear quarter, both doors had some bubbling on the bottom. Rust has been completely cut out and "butt" welding using very minimal bondo. I'm going to paint the black hood louvers red and all the other black parts matte. The bumper struts will be shortened to draw in the bumpers closer to the body. It was very scary and surprising to see some hack repair jobs done on my car. Tie raps, wire and tape were not uncommon. It's great to take it apart, update all the problems and really learn how this car was put together.
