I have quotes from a number of transporters. One I used to take a 944 to Ohio [open]. They were very careful and it ran the customer $750. He is quoting $500.00 from Rutlands in Tucker GA to Tampa area [450 miles]. Pick up/delivery same day. The car is in driver condition. The others are closed and coming in at $1050 - $1250.00. Sounds high for 450 miles...any thoughts?

I should add I was thinking of driving it down [as discussed in another thread].

    Call Gary Almond.

I have used him 3 times. Great prices and nobody cares for you car like he does. I also know dozens of others who have used him and they all say the same thing.

Here is the link to his site...

Tell him Toby asked you to call. ;)

It was $750 to transport my car from San Diego to Monterey ($1500 roundtrip), enclosed. I'd have to Mapquest it, but should be similar miles.

Check Intercity, Fedex Passport. Also call over to Sport Auto -- they have a local trucking company that did a nice job bringing my car to CA from NC (price was $1800 cross country).

I would never have my car shipped on an open trailer.

very good timing. i need a Lamborghini picked up in Stafford Virginia and brought here to Savannah.

i need to start making calls this week.

i have used Demoise Trucking twice and was happy. i would to get a few quotes, as the time it takes to get someone to get a car is as important as the cost to transport it. i dislike have having to wait 2-3 weeks so the big guys can fill the trucks.

Almond is in the same ballpark and has a good rep too...hopefully it will work out. How many miles did the $620 cover? I have a quote at $1.25/mile single enclosed/no stacking with camera monitors.

I've got a 20' open trailer and hual the 308, the corvettes and antying else that stikes my fancy w/ no problems.

400 miles on an open tailer in the SE with no salt, sand, or other debris on the road for a driver quality car is not going to hurt it one bit.

They can pick a nice day, bring it down and be done with it.

Being on an open trailer is (IMO) much safer than driving the car on the open road by itself...what's the probelm?

I never got that sophisticated as to calculate per mile charges. Just called and they said they'd have a truck pick it up that day. At that point i was done shopping transport. I guess it was 350 miles or so. Stayed up all night waiting for it.

    Then go for it.

I am recently coming out of a term in my life where every cent was important. I was on the other side... where $500-$1500-$2500 didn't matter...I then got to where it really "did" matter and now I'm back..... and now that I am back, it's more important that I get what I value in the condition I value it.

500 miles for $1/mile or there abouts is worth your time.

I mean, honestly I used to drive 250 miles OW to visit my wife (pre-nuptuals)...that took 5-1/2 hrs. Round trip, driving time only took 11 hours...or about 500 miles.

11 hours at my meager $40/hr rate = $440. With gas, food and other potential expenses, I'm ahead of the game if I can get a car deleivered for or at near $1/mile.

Get the car in your garage, start shining, cleaning, driving and enjoying the thing... it's only $ and you only go around once =)!

    Best of luck.

Mike...it's what I do full time. Mostly 1/43 scale stuff. I have some on Miniwerks.com from a private customer. I do everything except the actual cases. All base coat/clear coat with hand rubbed finishes. I machine some of the parts and add photo etched details, wiring, plumbing, etc. Here's a fully detailed F40 IMSA I completed recently. Sold for $2400. The less detailed models cost anywhere from $400-$800 and larger scales run a bit higher. I have models on Ferrariads every so often...some are there now but sold out.

I read your post with great interest but was tired and forgot to reply. I practiced architecture in NYC for 15 years before moving to FL. We had a CM department so I know what a challenge it is to do what you do. I watched some incredible construction projects. Even came within 2 blocks of a crane that fell off a building just east of 5th ave in mid town. The building had a 20 story tapered base and the crane bounced down the side taking out windows, etc. before hitting the street. Pretty dramatic stuff!

I started this business on the heals of leaving NY in 1990 when the economy was not great and needed other options. I started importing kits from overseas. This led to building commisions and eventually my first production 1/43 kit with Roush Racing and Ford Motor Co. giving their blessings. A board member funded the venture. I did Mike Dingmans GTO Mustang, then Tommy Kendall's Trans Am cars and Paul Newmans Daytona Mustang called "Nobodys Fool". Did some Historic models as well [Chaparrals]. Now I just build on my own and it is most enjoyable this time in my life ;)

Contact me off the board if you have something in mind. I can build just about any subject. Happy 2008 and a new 308...that's pretty good...same to you and yours! Peter and Jennifer
