I have just tried to go for a drive in my 308 GTSi QV and the car started without and problems after not being used for 3 months. Went to select reverse to back out of the driveway and the clutch pedal pressed in without any undue resistance or ease, just normal as usual but I could not select reverse, simplu went across to the left and would not engage. I then tried all of the other gears and I could not select any of the either. Turned the engine off and the tried to select the gears with the clutch pedal pressed down and it seemed to be OK. Can anybody help me here as it has me stumped a bit, I don't think the clutch/gearbox has gone down the pan as it was working without any difficulties before I stopped using the car 3 months ago. I am hoping something has just seized up through a lack of use. Has anybody else had a problem like this or know what it could be????

    1) jack up car and remove rear tires.
    2) remove the 'shifter gate'
    3) see if you can find 3rd gear
    4) see , when in 3rd, what kind of letteral movement you have with the shifter.
    5) the shifter should ne kinda neutral in the center-back in 3rd
    6) get under car with (2) 3/4 inch wrenches and tinker with linkage--adjusting in about 1 degree increments until all is ok....

Try starting the car in-gear with the clutch pedal depressed -- if it lurches forward you have something in the clutch not disengaging completely or rotating freely (so be prepared for a possible lurch -- like have room in front and keep on the brakes). If it starts and runs OK, (with the clutch pedal still depressed) try selecting a few other gears quickly (but smoothly) while it's running. If that's OK, go into neutral and release the clutch for a bit (say ~30 sec), then push the clutch in and see if you can select a gear easily or not.

    We'll wait for the results...

Your clutch is stuck. It's a pretty simple fix,try these
1.Start the engine and let it reach operarting temp, then try again, you may be lucky and the heat has freed off the clutch. This doesn't always work.

2.Start the car in gear(make sure you have a clear road)2nd or 3rd,then drive to about 20mph and hit the brakes, normally works every time.

3.Jack the rear wheels off the ground, start the car in gear again, get to about 20mph and get someone to let the jack down quickly.

Would recommend that you use method 2.

    Hope this helps

I have tried to put the car in gear, press the clutch pedal in and then start the car but all you get is a clicking noise - tried this in reverse and second both the same. The car does start fine in neutral and doesn't seem to have any problems. The other issues is that I cannot move the car. I took the handbrake off and with the car in neutral I could not move the car forwards or backwards. Any ideas.....help!!!

Got the car up to temperature first, didn't make a difference. Put the car into reverse, handbrake off and started the engine; the car buggered off backwards a bit. Put it into first, went forward a bit and then did reverse again and it seems to be working again. Thanks for the help and advice, I was absolutely panic stricken yesterday. Also is this a common problem and if so what are people doing to avoid this so I can prevent it happening in the future.

You don't give your location (and I know a lot of people here live in climates where some extended downtime is unavoidable), but "I stopped using the car 3 months ago" is sort of a sin for an automobile ;)

The best thing to do IMO would be to make sure that there's no condensation occurring in the storage environment. The small spaces between the clutch disk facings and the flywheel/pressure plate surfaces are, unfortunately, ideal for drawing in moisture from the atmosphere.

(No experience with this, but) It also might be possible to partially actuate the clutch to an "open" position for storage (since yours is a mechanical system, but I wouldn't want to leave the pressure plate mechanism fully stressed for an extended period).

The best reference I've come across for storage issues is a publication called "Old Cars Weekly" (and it's great for a bunch of other DIY issues too).

91TR has it about right.Storage conditions are the important factor in stopping this happeneing again.I keep mine in a Carcoon, this eliminates condensation, protects the car and helps prevent clutch and brakes from sticking.
If moisture is a particular problem then another solution could be a dehumidifier.
