Hi, I’m not quite worthy of you forum yet, I’m seriously thinking of a 308. I’ve just sold my two other classics and now have garage space and the enthusiasm to take the plunge

Concern – Ive had my eye on a 308 GTSi QV that’s been in the back of the paint shop since 1991. The car was serviced 2 ½ years ago by Ferrari – including cambelts. The body has been sprayed by the paintshop (guys who I know and trust) and looks perfect, the interior redone. Every thing works. Just needs the trim putting back together and MOT

The issue is it’s a LHD USA import in 1988, its in MPH and has cruse lights in the rear wing. The car is genuine and the history know 22,000 miles
What price tag would you put on such a car ?

hope to get it and join fully

First, welcome to the Forum. You will learn more about these cars than you ever dreamed to know here. I do hope that you will continue to join us and take part in these discussions. The more the merrier, especially when it comes to Ferraris!!!

Second, you need to know a lot more about this car. Simply saying it was serviced may or may not mean anything at all. Cars that sit a lot, like you are describing this one, tend to have a LOT more issues than cars that are driven.

The service interval is currently recommended to be 3-5 years, so you are closer to needing another service, possibly a MAJOR service, than you are not needing one. I would prefer to have one done on this car by a reputable service department even sitting for 2.5 years. About two years ago I looked at a 308 GTBi that had less than 2k miles on it. The interior was horrible, it had awful electrics, tires were flat spotted, the paint was ok, but the leather was ruined - all because it sat as more of a museum piece than being driven.

There are literally dozens of other issues that need to be checked out before someone could give you a real idea of where to begin.

Do you have or can you get photos of the car? Again, the more the better - and NOT photos from 2-3 years ago, current photos of where it is and such.

Can you get the VIN?? Those would help others to get more history on the car, that you may not be informed of.

    More Qs??

When they put the speedo in, did they change the odo to read in miles or does it still read in kilometers? If so, the 22k miles could be considerably less.

Was it originally a Euro car? or from somewhere else?

Where is the car now? Where are you located?

The more you provide the more we can help.

Was one of the other classics you sold a Stag? Regardless, you say it's a LH driver, but didn't say where you are located. If in the US, a LH driver is a good thing and that's what puzzles me. I guess I'm also a bit behind on acronymn, so tell me what MOT means.....Motor, Motor and Transmission? One last thing I'd say is that unless you are an experienced mechanic you should probably have an inspection made by someone who knows these cars. Could save you some headaches and big $$$.

Based on the information if I had to hazard a guess I am going to say that this is a US car imported into the UK. MOT is Ministry of Transportation which has to certify each car is fit for the roads - thus my UK guess. This also would clarify the Miles references...

My initial assumption was that the car was a US car or at least imported into the US, but I could very easily be mistaken.

Welcome to the board Nick. FC has certainly been a priceless wealth of information although sometimes you have to read between the lines. I'll try to be of assistance when I know I'm capable, but there are a lot of others that know far more than me and their help is always given freely and appreciated.

Welcome - 308s are great but....

This car if perfect wouldn't be worth £ 20 000 so without an interior in running order with a service history maybe ten grand

You cannot assume all the interior parts are there and the ones that are missing are always the expensive unobtainable ones

And whoever told you it was serviced by Ferrari is almost certainly not telling the truth since I do not believe it would have been sent back to Italy

    Lots to think about.

308's are cheap in the UK, so importing a LHD car only makes sense if it were VERY cheap to start with.
The upside is that this car may have less rust than the average UK car.

Nobody sends a car to be serviced after paint but before putting the interior in.

I'd be very careful but with an open mind. You may get away with a bargain 308, but the best bet is that it'll be a money pit, so base your offer on that possibility.

Not meant to be, I offered 15K, but the seller is adamant that he won’t accept less than 20K - Guess it will sit there for another 10 years.

Apparently interior removed due to fuel pump not working, fault traced to fuel pump, seems drastic, but I did notice a lot of scotch locks on the wiring.

Apart from re-trimming including door cars, it requires fuel pump, bonnet badge, and 4 tires

Though my offer was good, I’ll say bye and stick to more convention classics, but thanks for your quick and informative replies

When you say he wants 20K you are talking Pounds? I presume so, that makes it close to 40K USD. That would be steep over here. $15K may be appropriate over here for a vehicle in parts and non running like you describe. I haven't looked at conversion in a year but I don't think we're 1:1. It was close to 2:1 when I was there last. But best of luck and as my Mom always said if this one doesn't work out there will always be a better one around the corner if you keep looking. She was usually right on this.
