Help me guys, I am a newbie. My 1980 308 GTSI engine was dirty so I degreased it and thoroughly hosed it off. Got everything wet. Now it wont start.
Ignition is fine, as when I prime it with starting fluid it runs for a few seconds. Fuel pump is working, as there is plenty of pressure going through the injection "distributor". There is no fuel going through the lines to each individual injector. Did I screw up a relay or something? How can I troubleshoot? Thanks, Craig

I would suggest drying the motor with an air gun. Be specific on the electrical. Ford trucks have the same problem when the motor is washed. I believe water gets in the plug wires on them and the air blows all standing water from components. Hope this helps and good luck.

There is a blue connector on the fuel distributor that is the fuel pump shut off. I believe if you unplug that the fuel pump runs all the time. See if it is wet/shorted, make sure you hear the fuel pump with it removed.

Also make sure that no water has gotten down to the sparkplugs. It will short them out. I know from experience

I reckon it would be electrical.
Get your normal garden blower (hopefully you have one) Gaf tape a length of PVC tube to its outlet that is about 1 inch diameter.
Now you have a blower that blows through this tube only.
Take off the spark plug leads from the spark plugs including the extenders if you have them. Do not take out the spark plugs!
Then one by one get that PVC tube down into the plug wells. Typically you will see a whole lot of water being blown out.
I would also have a good look at the plug leads. Dry them if you can with a hair dryer or just blown air.
Have a good look at the distributor cap. Open it up and check that no moisture has built up in there.
Try and get all of these components dry. If weather permits, get the engine bay into the sunshine to get the whole thing warm and drying out.
Hopefully the car will start after that. Even if it runs roughly, run for about ten minutes and that heat soak will help dry out anything you have overlooked.
There's nothing wrong with what you have done, as it is good to get the whole thing clean as a good starting point for your new car.
You just have to be aware that getting all that water around the engine bay will cause hassles initially.

    Steve.
