i bought an 81 308 about 2 years ago - pure impulse; red snout sticking out of a non descript used car lot in wareham ma (not ferrari territory). it's a barchetta (you know the old saying that a boat is something that floats and you need to periodically pore money into it to keep it that way). anyway i had a long list of minor jobs (water pump replacement, thermostat, etc) which included a broken heater control cable. thanks to you guys getting the center console plate off was easy, but fitting a new cable looked like a pain. and then i realized that all i had to do was expose both ends (easy) and remove the old, broken one and shove a new one in. seastrand single wire ss leader (360# test, .043 in diam) is available from any salt water tackle store in my area. 10 min job - try it you'll like it. apologies to regulars if this is old news. jon

There is another trick here. I removed and replaced the black sheath with bicycle sheath (teflon lined) and just bought a roll of wire at the hardware store. Works slick.

also a good thought, but the idea is that the old sheath is usually intact and replacing the cable alone is really quick. jon

Often all that's needed is to inject lubricant into the cable.

Motorcyclists solved that problem years ago. Most cycle shops & web sites sell a 'cable luber' that clamps around one end of the cable & seals it pressure tight. You then inject cable lube into the luber from an aerosol can using the can's red tube. Great for throttle cables as well.
