My heater control lever is as smooth as silk when coolant is cold to warm. But when engine reaches running temp the valve jambs solid. Allowing the engine to cool a little and releasing the pressure helps. This is on a fully reconditioned engine and cooling system. Any ideas?

the heater control valve is a simple plunger mechanism under the fiberglass shroud by the spare tire. When you pull the cable lever, it open/closes said valve letting hot water into the heater cores.

First, I would observe the action/throw of the plunger to see if the cable/lever mechanism is hanging up under super hot conditions. It probably isnt.

The heater control valve itself is probably shot. Take it out and peek inside it, and you will probably find the guts are shot.

Its an expensive little basterd too, for such a simple little part. And IIRC the part that was supplied when mine went bad needed fabrication to get it to mount properly.

If yours is bad, I think I have the name of a guy that will rebuild it. Let me know.

here is a pic of my shot heater valve, those rubber bits are the seals that failed, and yours are probably jamming the valve up.

    Thanks Geno,
I am not where the car is at the moment so I can't get a photo. But my valve is a bit different to yours I think - Euro 74 gt4. I am pretty sure it's not possible to open it for repair. But I will be able to have a better look next week. The contact for the guy who can fix these would be helpfull. Cheers, Waz.

Mine didnt look like it was possible either. and I am not sure that it was, the guy told me he would cut it open and rebuild it, but said he wouldnt promise anything. I will dig it up.

I wanted to link my post regarding 308 Heater Control Valves, I found a source in Italy that will ship DHL to the US, and the valves themselves look identical to the ones on my '85 308 QB. Only 38 euros each, not bad considering all other sources out there want $200+ for each. The rubber in these valves get perished after 35 years, and I have not read about anyone taking one apart to replace just the rubber.

Ill post then I get them and how they fit, but they look to be identical. Here the reference:
