My 308 suddenly started making a grinding nose when the steering wheel was turned and based on other posts it seemed like the horn contact and slip ring would be a good place to start looking. I got the steering hub removed and was able to see a steel sleeve inside the horn slip ring moving around when the slip ring is rotated. It floats freely between the slip ring and the snout of the column switch assembly. Is it supposed to be free floating? Does it fasten to the ‘snout’ of the column switch assembly, or to the inside of the slip ring piece? The tip of the horn contact seems ok, and the place it contacts the slip ring seems to be fine (aside from being dirty, there is some copper-type grease around the area). The slip ring itself seems to be eating away at the snout of the column switch that it slips over.

I apologize for not being able to explain this well, but can anyone tell me if/how this steel sleeve is supposed to be oriented, and is it supposed to be fixed to the snout or inside the slip ring hub?

The slip ring goes around the snout and should not move. If you remove the column switch and look at the snout, you will notice some flat and rounded, raised areas. The spring will go around the snout and fit into the flats. When installed correctly, it sort of locks into position.

The horn ring/ turn signal cancel ring is held on to the snout with three tabs on the snout. When you put the ring assembly on the snout, the metal piece has to be in position and flat against the snout. If you hold the metal piece in position with one hand and the ring in the other hand, you can usually ease it onto the snout and catch the top area of the metal piece. Once started, just push it down. Then it should pop right on and be locked on with the three tabs.

Also when you reinstall the steering wheel, make sure the two big plastic "fingers" sticking up from the horn ring/turn signal cancel ring fit into the recesses in the bottom of the steering wheel.

Like this? I bent the ends of the sleeve inward a bit before reinstalling, and now it won’t rotate with the slip ring hub installed. Noise is gone, horn works, turn signals cancel.

    Thanks!
