    Greetings Tifosi.
1982 308GTSi. Previous owner had to get the ignition re-keyed when someone took the key as a souvenir at the body shop when the car was in for some work about 3 years ago. Key is old and worn but has worked fine up until tonight. Had bought two new blanks and had them cut from my working key but they never worked.

Had to play around with the key for a few minutes while wiggling the wheel and the car started. Turned the key off and removed it. Tried again, same thing....took a few minutes and lots of gentle turns and wiggling of the wheel but it finally turned the ignition.

Put a quick shot of contact cleaner into the key ignition switch and it didn't seem to help much. Am thinking that the ignition might need to be pulled and looked at by a certified locksmith.

Would like to have a diagram of the ignition switch removal and install. Any advice? Anyone have a diagram they could send me?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

If I am reading this right then your problem is not an electrical one but a mechanical one in that your key does not turn free and predictably. If that is the case you will need to replace your ignition key barrel and it is a fairly time consuming job. The barrel is held in place with a self-destructing screw whose head shears off when the correct installation torque is reached leaving behind a domed screw head. If you Dremmel a slot on this dome you can use a flat-headded screwdriver to remove the bolt and the whole lock assembly will come out. Now for the bad news accessing this requires that you drop the steering column which is a ton of work. The second piece of bad news is that a replacement lock is well into the high hundreds to replace. Try to first find a used lock with working keys before starting. Best of luck with the project.

Thanks Nuvolari. I am hoping that the locksmith may have already taken care of the two self-destructing screws and they will come out easy. Have sent an email to the PO who is a member here on Fchat.

In the meantime, does anyone have a pic or diagram of the location of the two screws so I can see if I am screwed or not -LOL

Am hoping that the locking mechanism might be sticking and that it can be lubed and replaced....but then again I do buy the occasional lottery ticket so wishful thinking is something I do sometimes :)

Thanks in advance for any ideas or pics.

I ordered new keys for my 308 from a company in Canberra,Australia www.keys4classics.com, and all I gave them was the key code from my owners manual, two new keys arrived and both work perfectly. Also got a spare door key as well. $44 for two ignition keys plus two door keys.

    Colin,

    I`m not exactly sure what you`re looking for...so take this ... ;)

1.) steering column with lock removed

(in the following pic the screw with the "self-destructing" head is already changed to a "slot" style bolt)

this part consisting of shaft and lock cylinder housing is one piece (you cannot separate this)

    2.) ignition switch

if you only had to change this switch you would not have to remove the whole column
(just lean on your back with head on the pedals, legs on the seat, looking up...well you get the idea ...;)

Hey Gang. Looks like a crisis and surgery was averted.

A mechanic friend gave me a can of Wynn's X-Tend Foam Spray that penetrates, disperses water and lubricates. It comes in an aerosol can with a tiny tip for getting into the deep spots. The stuff foams and climbs into the cracks and crevices.

Gave a quick spray (battery disconnected) worked the key in and out a few times. Another quick shot and the key loosened right up.

Am thinking that the steering lock rod might have been gummed up.

All seems to be good with the car.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

    Cheers-Colin

Here is a link to the steering column diagrams for a selection of Ferraris.

From what I have learned, the ignition setups are similar from the 308GT4 straight through to the early 328. You might want to confirm numbers just to be sure.
