HAVING AN ANNOYING WHISTLE FROM MY '80 308 GTSI THAT HAPPENS WHEN ACCELERATING. I DON'T NOTICE IT AT IDLE, NOR AT FULL THROTTLE, BUT IT'S PRETTY STRONG AT HALF THROTTLE. MOVING THE PEDAL SLIGHTLY WHILE IT'S HAPPENING DOES CHANGE THE WHISTLE, WHICH IS LEADING ME TO WONDER IF IT COULD BE THE THROTTLE BODY OR METERING PLATE? ANYONE EXPERIENCE THIS?

I HAVE TRIED THE INSERTS FOR THE EXHAUST TIPS, THAT'S NOT IT. THE NOISE IS MUCH STRONGER WHEN DRIVING THE CAR THAN IF I OPEN THE THROTTLE WHILE IT'S JUST STANDING IN NEUTRAL, SO I CAN'T QUITE GET A HANDLE ON THE SOURCE FROM STANDING IN THE DRIVEWAY. IT ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE IT COMES FROM THE FRONT BANK? ANY IDEAS?

LET ME ALSO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK ALL YOU FOLKS THAT SUPPORT AND CONTRIBUTE TO THIS FORUM. I'VE LEARNED A LOT FROM YOU!

    THANKS, MATT

First, turn off your Caps Lock! Use capitals if you want to SHOUT a message. Thanks :)

Second, is your car carbed or fuel injected?

HE SAID IT WAS AN 80 GTSI. Sorry didn't mean to yell but I can't believe you didn't hear him the first time ;)

Somewhere in my foggy memory there is something about the throttle body making this noise on some of the injected cars. Here are a couple of threads that kind of pertain

Matt, welcome to F-chat. One piece of friendly advice (other than turning off the caps lock!) Up in the top left hand corner there is a search button. You can find more information there than you will probably ever need but it takes a little practice to get the results you really want. Some of the best results are on the old F-chat archives. One thing to watch for there is the threads start at the bottom and you read up from there. Just the opposite of the site now.

Good luck and again Welcome to F-chat!

Sorry 'bout the yelling, must be really loud where I am. I'll try to type quieter!

My search efforts have ended up with good info on exhaust tips, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. Has anyone come across a whistling throttle body?

I had whistling coming from the intake/scoop area a few weeks ago and I traced it to a loose ring that connects the air filter box to the component on which it rests. I wiggled the air filter box and it was loose just slightly and air was getting sucked thru the small opening. After tightening the ring screw the whistling went away. Car is a 328. HTH.

My '80, 308 gtsi did the same thing. I attributed it to the sound of the belts...made a whirring...whistle noise. Did it all the time even after new belts... I never made any connection to the fuel delivery system & the whistle.
I liked it, made it sound "turboed"..
