Well last night the 308 was lot to Fire while filling up wih gas, the gas nozzle never shut off and , overfilled the tak and caught of fire, first thing got my wife out of the car. that was very scary, we are fine just shook up alittle. The weirdest thing happen, the car was burning for about 10-15 minutes, the car start rolling by iyself for about 50 feet and even jump a curb with the front wheels and just kept burning until the Fire Department came. The most important thing is I got my wife and to safety

Awe man I am sorry to hear that. I was looking forward to seeing the car next time I was down there. Glad you and your wife are OK.

Is the car a total loss?

Very sorry to hear and you are both okay, which is the main thing...

I have never left my Fcar on autofueling...actually, now we have dual vapor recovery hoses that require you to pressure them over the filler opening.....

Again very glad you are both okay, rolling away from the pumps was most likely very fortunate......parking brake cable melted....

Got them here too. Instead of just a metal nozzle, there's this big flexible coupling also that seals over the filler opening to bring the gas fumes back to a recovery system. It's a pain on older machines and motorcycles. On the 328, there's no way to turn on the autofill, because the flex nozzle won't maintain a good seal without you holding it down onto the car.

You'll know when you run into one...here in Houston the pollution and ozone are so elevated all fuel pumps have these hoses that pump fuel in the inner line and recover escaping vapor laden air as it escapes from your tank neck...

There is a rubber bellows around the steel snout with an integral microswitch, the gas pump will not run until your hand pressure of the bellows onto the tank neck senses this pressure sealing the hose to the neck.....closing the microswitch that controls power to the pump...

It's so complicated the idea of using the old clip to keep the pump 'on' is obsoleted by this new feature....

PLUS all us 308 owners should worry about the filler neck coupling I replaced one of mine this week.

I routinely run less than 1/2 tank of fuel, less to deal with if the Sheeit hits the fan....long trips being the exception...HTH

We have them in California (obviously...)

    I don't trust the autofill.

Dominick, very sorry to hear about the car, but again we're all glad you and the wife are OK. There's always another car to buy.

You might want to check to see if that gas station has had any problems with that particular pump recently. I had this happen to my Jag recently when getting gas, luckily it didn't catch fire, just made a big mess. Funny thing was I remember abotu a week before that pump had an out of order sign on it. The sign was gone when I got gas, but then a week later there was a sign stating that the pump may not automatically shut off. I guess they were too cheap/lazy to get it fixed.

Sorry to hear about your car, but it can be replaced. You are both ok and that is what is important.

For all of you want to know what Dominicks car used to look like here it is. Took this photo last end of June, 07
Dominick, I really do think that it is the gas station fault for having a faulty pump, that should have shut off specially on a 308.
This is a safety issue and it should be investigated. This could have happen to anyone, imagine if this car had a back with a kid strap in the car seat.
Anyway so sorry again and most important thing is that you and your wife are SAFE.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear of it as well. It's a blessing there were no injuries. Good luck in finding a replacement ride. We would love to have you over in the 348 zone. If it were me, I know I'd take some time to mourn the loss. Most ppl would think I was nuts, but that's how it is when you lose a great friend like your F-car. It's weird. If my BMW's burned, it'd be no big deal - woohoo, I get to buy another one. If my 348SS burned I'd be inconsolable. We're here for you, my friend.

Another reminder to all 308 owners to replace the filler neck hose (even though that wasn't the cause of the fire in this case)
I've gotten into the habbit of filling the car when it's cold and never use auto fill on the pump. ( I have a station 3 blocks away, the engine is barely warm when I get there.)
I'm glad everyone is safe, a scary close call though.

Also glad you were not hurt!

What the hell caused the spark? I have spilled gas all over the place a hundred times. It takes something to ignite it. That is, unless it is spilling onto something red hot.
