308 Louvers - need refinishing

Looks like they painted it over the original finish.

 

I see some cars the louvers are black and some are other colors like red on red cars. From the factory what color should they be. On my 85 euro red car they are red. Did someone paint them red or could they have come from the factory that way. Where the louvers painted differant on euro cars than the US cars?

I believe you are referring to the louvers on the top of the front fenders, and hood. If so, then yes they came in different colors black for US market cars and body color for EURO market. Thats typically one of the first but not the only indicator of a US vs EURO car. But not in all cases as some people have painted their louvers on their US market cars for a different look.

 

Also, there are a few Euro cars with factory black louvres on a different body colour. My 84 Euro QV is one of perhaps a few that has black louvres, but they are definitely factory finish black on Rosso Corsa.

 

Pictured are GTS side window louvers. They will need to be refinished. Satin black. Looks like someone painted them flat black. The silver stripe is correct. I think way we did this on my car was to paint the silver, then mask the silver, then spray the black.

The silver stripes went away on the 328

 

Thanks for clearing that up. My car is a 85 red euro with red louvers. Doesn't look like they were ever painted. I don't think my car has had any paint work done but the front spoiler. I like my car as close to original looking as possible.

 

On my '83 the louvers are not painted, they are anodized black. The ones in the picture appear to have been painted, perhaps you can just strip the paint and be back to original.

 

No side window louvers were ever painted red from the factory, only black satin anodised (with silver highlights on some 308's, never on the 328).

The side window louvers are plastic.
The metal louvers on hood fenders and rear deck are black anodized.

 

Some of the early 308 did came with the aluminum side louvers.

 

Didn't know that. But the car in question is an 83.

 

Then plastic vent louvers and black anodizes aluminum grills.......period.

 

These are of course plastic. Not anodized. Possibility that the original finish was exposed black plastic with painted silver stripes. But I doubt it as molding inconsistencies would show through. I think you can see the original satin peaking through on your pics where the flat black has peeled. You are going to have to strip that flat paint and refinish with satin black and silver. I believe that is the way they were originally done.

 

Here is a photo of my side window louver (1983 GTS QV). The sheen of the louver is slightly flatter than the black paint on the B pillar. Neither is flat; sort of a satin sheen.

The silver is definitely painted on. It's hard to tell whether the black is plastic or paint. The silver is so precisely done, it is hard to imagine how they did it.

If your going to restore your louvers you will need to paint them or find NOS and replace them. So it really doesn't matter if they are black plastic or painted.

 

Silver Sharpie on the ends after spraying black works great.

If you don’t like the silver outlines, you can go with the 328 style.

SEM makes a black trim paint that is an excellent match for sheen. Comes in rattle cans. Proper prep is essential I in painting plastics.

 

SEM has a few part numbers. What one is best?

 

I used this one for various bits. I also put a couple of light coats on my bumper to freshen it up because it was slighty faded in spots. Very good match for sheen.
