Hello, I am in the process of a timing belt change following Birdman's procedure and was wondering if anyone here could provide me with a simple drawing of a cam lock "device" I could fabricate in hardwood? Importing specialised tool from the US to Europe is just too long and too expensive for something as simple as that and a drawing would save me time to get the right design. Many thanks and have a great week end!

This is my first Ferrari and I am quite well impressed by the US community! Good on you guys!

Great idea, and simple, the only problem might be to find the hockey stuff, as we don't play much hockey here! Might try with some rubber wheels cut in half. Was thinking initially of this design (comes from Birdman's site).

If you want to take it over the top (as I am prone to doing), below is a pattern for a cam lock for the QV engine. The reality is that it doesn't have to be very fancy and there are lots of klugie ways of holding the cams stationary.

Trace the pattern onto a single piece of 3/4" thick wood. Drill the hole for the bolt before cutting any of the wood. Cut away all the wood that doesn't look like a cam lock. Insert bolt. Enjoy.

Brian, this is exactly what I did. Rey easy to make, cheap and very effective.

They say that great minds think alike and I think you are brilliant!

About the only difference between our two designs is that I made mine a bit shorter so that the top bold head does not touch the timing belt.

Seems like I read somewhere that Ferrari just recommends use of a C-clamp or vise grips...

    Hi Brian
Just drawing out your cam lock for the QV and I am having trouble in viewing the figures. Is the total height 2 1/2 inches or 2 1/4 inches.? on my my drawing there is 1/2 inch of material at centre, is this correct.
    Thanks
    Glen

Reference post #2. Works perfect and used several times over 14 years.

That is a "2 1/2" that is scribed in my impeccable calligraphy.

    Yes, 1/2" of waste wood between the two halves (4" - 2 x 1 3/4").

The reality is that you can probably cut klugey trianges of wood and they would probably grip just fine.

thats what i use as well but you do have to remove the valve covers to use them. I time the cams when i replace the belts... but opinions on that are all over the map... unless you ask Ferrari then that is just how its done.. by the manual

I remove the valve covers every time I change the belts so I can set the valve clearances and change the cam seals. If I am going to the trouble of changing the belts, I prefer to make it a complete service. I also change the tensioner bearings every time.

So how often should you change the belts? Ok, just kidding.

    Happy Thanksgiving F-Chatters.

Every time you replace the tensioner bearings, cam seals and adjust valve clearances.
