308 Motor work

    That looks ok to me...some casting flash on the corners but the die stamps are distinct, and deep.....the engine shop was not hiring artists..

    The answer is: Yes, and no.

    By the years of the 308 production the numbers were no longer "matching".
    The engines were ordered by spec and came in by batches.

    So from each batch, they were installed in the relevant (and matching spec, by country) vehicle. But they were palletized I am sure and probably installed in the reverse order in which they were stacked against the wall of the Factory.

    Classiche can only say your motor "matches the range" of engines in the factory at the time.

    I have one that exploded under warranty and was replaced at 6K miles, I am sure the second motor is "in the range" also as they had it on hand!

    So in your stamping the top line is the series of the engine.

    The five numbers between the stars on the bottom row are the sequential engine number, and there were probably twenty "brothers and sisters" along in that batch. As Ferrari made the cars, early on, the 'glass cars for America are well documented as batches of twenty cars.

    Maybe later as they ramped up the batches got larger...

    But these days Classiche would charge you a LOT of money to tell you, and in the end, who cares??

    There are no more pistons.
    All used up.

    So, fingers crossed how your set, and the liners look.

    The 00s are a good sign, indicating your early car....that's 308 engine #542 (North American dual distributor R1/R2 spec)

    Did the GTB's have a different number scheme than the 308/GT4 Dinos? I do know the Dinos had even chassis numbers, the Pininfarina 308s had odd chassis numbers. I thought the engines were essentially the same in those days. The one in the picture sure looks like mine except for the blocked-off rear distributor mount.

    Here are the number plates for my '75 308/GT4.

    I have a slightly later car with a much earlier engine number, #43 compared to your #542. Is your 308 a U.S. car?

    While I was reading another thread about build sequence numbers, I noticed some people have engine numbers with just the five digits and others have the 021 included. I am no expert on this so I do apologize for any incorrect statements.
    Just seemed odd to me that your car being earlier than mine had a larger engine number.
    My engine was only out once. So I was curious of matching.
    To have the classice done will cost around $3000.
    Resto is looking nice.
