Every once in awhile I notice something new on a 308. Today as i was looking at an interior shot of a 308 I noticed that particular car had a six digit odometer and I had always thought that all 308's had a five digit. I searched online to see if maybe it was early cars or euro cars that had the six digit but found no consistency throughout the different iterations of 308. So what did the diffefrent 308's come from the factory with?

The US speedometer put in my 84 Euro whenever it was federalized is a 6 digit as well. I believe this has been discussed before and no one could find any rhyme or reason to which ones had 5 or 6 digit, many 328s still had a 5 digit.

Since we are looking at gauges and such, why is the mounting plate bare aluminum on some and others are painted black ?

I believe the black painted gauge cluster plate started on injected cars, and carbed cars were aluminum. Not 100% sure though.

Thanks! Were they only used on US cars or did you see any of those also on an EU car?

Interesting, thanks! I wonder if there was some legal or federalization reason in some states requiring this. Had not seen one until this post.

I believe it was the Energy Tax Act of 1978 (DOE/EPA) that inacted the Gas Gussler tax, reduced the national speed limit to 55 and required 80 MPH speedodometers.

My 1982 308 GTSi came with a 80 MPH - five digit odometer. As Wilson mentioned, "no rhyme or Reason," there are many variations on a theme, which is more consistent with the myth of Ferrari!

Maybe the cars with five digit odo were not expected to ever go past 99,999 miles. Either they rusted out or got set back, both very common.
