Here's the 308 I saw on the weekend It has approx 12,000 miles. The car is located in the Phoenix area, so zero known rust issues 1977 GTB, Carbs. Paint is in good shape. Engine is clean, has tools and manuals Seats are standard. Tires appear to be just fine, but the car will most likely need all new rubber and fuel hoses to make it really nice. The owner is inviting offers. The consignment cost is 5% or a minimum of $2,500, payable by the seller. He thinks it's worth north of $40k net to him Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
a few things: 1) when you say manuels, does it have the warrenty card ? 2) How many owners in history total ? 3) Last services? 4) Has the engine ever been rebuilt ? 5) Im assuming its a steal car ? not glass 6) how is the dash , and trim ? 7) Original small radio, or did they cut it out to put the new big stereo 8) When were the carbs rebuilt ? 9) I cant really tell if the polution controls are there, does the come come with ? 10) have you checked the bottom to make sure of previous damage ? The more towards the original it is - the better this price becomes, have you driven it yet ? So far, not out of line in the 40 range for a good solid steel car in my book if all the above checks out well.
I'm getting the car PPI'd next week so I'll have a lot more info. AFAIK, two owners only, the last one for 12 years Don't think it has the warranty card Engine is still stock steel car dash and trim look good The carbs were redone a long time ago, so they probably need new gaskets Regardless, I'd change all hoses and fuel lines and rubber belts Bottom of the car looks fine, very small oil leak No idea about pollution controls Radio looks stock but I don't know for sure Trunk is good and clean and engine bay is dusty but otherwise clean It has an aftermarket alarm system but this will be removed by the seller More info in a couple of weeks when the PPI is done. I think it will go quickly based on early feedback so far
as long as there wasnt a hack job with the alarm and radio - you are good...the warrenty card would be a very nice bonus to have ...not many of these cars come with...adds to the value .... Im sure the ppi will be favourable , especially since you are starting with a good base before you tackle all the hoses and carbs.... the pollution controls , see if you can ask for them, they are not cheap ...easy to find as there are many 308s, again, its another nice to have. good luck, so far, looks like a good buy.... see if you can put a hold on it for yourself based on the ppi being very favourable.
Radios were dealer installed, there is no "original unit" per se...... It was one West Coast dealer that did that wheel paint treatment, over the Factory OEM silver.... Looks nice! Pollution controls on a 1977 are air injection pumps, thermo muffler, and the charcoal canister.
Not really. I'm just the agent. This is what I do, but usually with cars from the 50's and 60's. 308 are not my usual stock in trade. I believe the car was originally delivered from Hollywood Sport Cars because I saw a service receipt for its initial service in the glovebox.
Car will probably need new rubber as the previous poster stated. Phoenix is death to rubber. That's a $30k car IMO. Guy will never get $40k. No chance. And save your "yeah for a rat trap on flea bay" or "yeah $30k for a neglected car". This car isn't clean enough to tell me that this car is any better than any "random" on EBay. He cares so much about this car that he didn't even bother to wipe down the engine bay. That's two months worth of driving in Phoenix on that engine bay. It's filthy. I always say "if guys aren't concerned with the things you CAN see, I have doubts about their efforts with the things you can't see".
use this as example, ask Big Tex if he is willing to let one of his steal cars go for 30 grand ? he has two, im sure he would be able to spare one...but ask him if he will let it go for 30 or 35k better still...why not post on here, and see how many steel guys are willing to sell there car at 30k? if by chance the answer is "Crickets" in the crowd....please show us all where there is another 30k steel car for sale that 410SA could compare.
Looks very nice, probably original seat leather. Not a red GTB guy, but someone will get a nice car. There was also a dealer that painted them back in the day when they were new -- pretty famous Goodyear ad from back then showing painted wheels. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That car looks straight, original and unmolested to me. If the PPI checked out and the car were detailed I think 40k would a fair price considering the low mileage, though there might be wiggle room considering all the rubber should be replaced.
I think you bring up a good point. I know there is no way I would part with my 77 GTB for $30k. If someone offered $40k I definitely would consider it. If they offered $50k, I'd sell it in a heartbeat... I think a lot of people who own the early steel cars bought them because they could afford them and really have no compelling reason to sell them. So maybe the market has shaken out most of the good cars and the remaining cars are candidates for restoration projects or parts.
Why are 308 owners so negative about reasonable cars trying to get higher prices? The car in question IMO is an easy 40k car. Let the prices rise! If the people that own these cars don't value them to the high side, who will?
My friend who just bought a Diablo wanted to buy my 1977 308GTB that he know well. He used it for a full 2 weeks last year in his holyday. My car is not a perfect car. But a very nice driver with 27000 miles, no history, no books, no tools. Solid reliable fun car. He was ready to pay $35K. I didn't sell.
George, I am also shocked at how negative so many are here on the 308s, I love mine, black GTB, and I maintain it to the highest standard, I've got $80K in it, would I sell for $40, NO. Is it actually saleable at $40 or more, NO, but I just don't want to sell. I wouldn't want a 360, I think they are mostly nice used cars, I mean because of the really high production and the fact that they are modern cars equipped with all the greatest stuff, of their time, all that great stuff has been replaced on newer cars with better great stuff. 308s didn't have any stability control, traction control, launch control, electronic nannies, variable valve timing, or any of that great stuff, it's just a fine looking sports car, and will always be just that! This IS the 3x8 section, I could understand our cars not getting much love in another section, but most of the people, or at least many of them don't seem to value 308s all that much, seems strange to me.
