in 1983 the exchange rate to canadian was 1.23; $60,000 x 1.23 = $73,800 canadian. I try to relate to cost of goods. In 1983 I purchased a house for $81,000 so this 308 = 91% of the house price. So yes, it was a BIG number for the average person, outside of their reach. The average person had a better chance of reaching out and touching one of the Price is Right female stage candy....but Bob Barker had his dibs there already.
I hate to admit it, but I used to watch that show all the time. The host for this episode was Bill Cullen (he did a lot of TV game shows), not sure where Bob Barker was, but this may have been one of the evening shows others have mentioned already. IIRC BB did all the shows later on in the series whether day time or nite time shows.
Mark is right, It's Tom Kennedy, not Bill Cullen. Cullen stopped Price is Right way back in the early 70's. (The other host I was trying to remember that hosted the evening version I remember as a kid was Dennis James. His name finally came to me)
