I am in the process of repainting the front end of my '85 QV. Clear Bra will be applied after the repainting. But I'm most concerned about the underside of the front of the car, after I repaint/repair the front. It's pretty scratched up right now, due to bottoming out at high speeds, coming out of parking lots, etc. I was wondering if anybody has found a source for skid plates or has had skid plates fabricated for the front of their 308 or 328?
Yes, there was a group buy from like four years ago that was put together by one of the Fchatter, sorry couldn't remember maybe somebody here could chime in. Here's what they look like. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Timely post! I took one of those "Oh S**T!!" whacks making a left turn from a high crowned street onto a side street yesterday and I'm looking for protection too. I'd like to know more about the guard plate in the pic.
I need a 328 front skid plate, for sure. Gleggy in Australia made a bunch of 308 US and Euro aluminum skid plates a few years ago, I handled that group buy. Maybe I should contact him and see if he can do another run, for 328s as well this time.. I'll report back here. Greg 87 328
I would definitely be interested in that buy. The sooner the better. After my car is repaired, I'll be hesitant to take the car our before it's protected. Thanks for the assistance, Greg!
Yes i did I got some 2" wide side moulding you see on the door,s of car,s in black and screw them on 6" appart in to the fibergass the are 5/16 thick and very strong,i have them on for 5 years now and the still ok.I will send some pics, low cost and you cant see them, and if you scrape on off just install a new strip.
Hi Mike, I see you also bought the louvered panel as well. Did you notice any cooling benefit??? If I recall correctly, Gleggy also manufacturers the following improvement items for the 308: Stainless steel sump baffel. Louvered access plate, (as shown above). The Skid plate. Timing belt block off plates for the early cars, to keep nuts, bolts and debris from falling into the works. Clever Fellow, that Gleggy, got most of his stuff. chris
I sent a PM today, hopefully Gleggy is still an active F-Chat member and will respond. It's been probably 5 years since I dealt with him. And yes, I did get the 308 front underbody vent panel, as well as the skid plate and the oil sump baffle. I think he also sold me an engine heat shield that my 308 was missing. Mounted in the lower rear, if I recall correctly... I'll let you guys know if/when he gets back to me.. Greg
Gregg, I searched the archives and found an email that may be helpful. Here is the previous post: "Murray/Gleggy is one of the seller's buds. The maker of these parts is Gerry Duyvestyn and can be reached at [email protected] - great guy, super easy to work with." The original post is located here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=171706&highlight=forzaparts%40gmail.com&page=4 Let me know if you think it's a good idea to email Gerry. I'm happy to do it. Matt
Hi Chris, as far as the louvered panel, it did help a little bit, but the skid plate sure helps a lot specially going over those super high speed bumps. The sump baffle, believe it or not, I have not installed it yet. I plan to do this when I change my shift shaft seals.
Matt, go for it, see what he has to offer. Gleggy just returned my PM, he's going to call me ASAP. I'll try to get some group pricing on these things. Greg
Just to let you know that my mechanic used the material that is found at the bottom of a grader's blade. Its made of I don't know what material but its pretty tough and he was able to cut parts that he just bolted at each end of the frontend. Its black so it doesn't show except if you take a really good look. And when it will be too tired I'll just have to unbolt it and replace it with a new one.
Interesting, When I was getting ready to buy my car three years ago, there was a guy selling spoiler skid plates on ebay that went on the bottom of the spoiler for a 328, not sure if anyone has any input on that , or if they are thinking of mounting a skid plate behind the spoiler. Last time I drove my 328, I parked it and hit a curb ;-( Didn't do any damage, but I sure hated the sound..... Where would the vented plate go on a 328? Keep me posted on the progress of a group buy. Thanks, Bob
On closer inspection of the picture posted by Mike Tuason, that style of skid plate won't do me any good. When ever I get a "pavement kiss", its on the radiused forward edge of the shallow boxy steel bottom pan behind the front spoiler; much closer to the front of the car. The skid plate pictured above seems to be designed perhaps for ice-rutted streets or perhaps protection from running over junk or critters on the road.
I heard from Gerry today. He is the maker of the last batch of skid plates. He is on vacation right now and will be back on the 23rd, at which time he will let me know how many sets he still has left in stock. I'll post the details then.
I've only hit the crossmember a few times, so bought the skid plate. Like you most of my impacts are on the front lower corners of the front trunk "box", typically on entering or leaving a gas station or driveway. I have yet to installthe skid plate but am looking for something like HDPE strips or blocks to place under the front corners. McMaster Carr has a bunch of this stuff available and i might go with it. chris
Hi Mike, Not to hijack this thread, but i installed the sump baffel and it works as advertised. The hardest part was getting the old pan gasket off - cast iron BI*CH. I also used McMaster carr's stat o seal gasketed washers to try to keep the oil in. Good time to replace the oil temp sender as well. How many spoilers hafe you replaced??? Car looks good. chris
Gerry came back from vacation on January 23. Although he said he would write me with the details of the inventory that he still had, I have not heard from him. I emailed him several days ago to follow up, but did not receive a response. Sorry guys, but I think we've reached a dead end on Gerry. Has anybody else had luck tracking down those with info on the batch of skid plates fabricated two or so years ago?
I'd like to get one for for my 328 if it is available. They are very useful especially for back road driving.
i bought one of the louvered panels. it made a great improvement not only in engine temp but also in cabin temp as well/
Bump and FYI, I'm interested in one for my 328. I was under the car looking and.......yep, been hitting something.
