    I have a guestion guys,
When I bought my 79 308, it was fitted with gold 16"BBS wheels. I thought they weren't original, but now I found out by reading the 308 archive, that in 79 the BBS wheels were upgraded option. So are these good for the value of the car since it was an upgraded option in 79 even though they aren't Ferrari rims?

    What do they look like?

Five spoke star or "basket weave"?

Doubtful it was a factory option, but many DEALERS upgraded the cars to BBS wheels in the 1980's. Trust me, they add little to the car, other than the performance upgrade of using 16" tires and wheels. For concours, you need the original 14" wheels. For performance and the "traditional look", you need the 16" QV wheels.

    They look like basket weave.
Go to yahoo and type in ferrari 308 archives.
The one where the address is geocities is the one you want. There are two articles posted with the 308 and it has BBS wheels. In the article it states that it's an upgraded option for the car.

I think this is the link you are referring to...
    http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/8167/308archives/

Note the R&T article makes no mention of the wheels being an option, what so ever. Just that they were supplied by Intermag.

The other article is from a European magazine, again, it mentions an "extra cost option", but is in no way definitive to it being a "factory" option.

Regardless, I believe this was done by the dealers, not the manufacturer or importer. It was never an "official" or recognized factory option. But I'm open to someone proving me wrong.

So possibly the dealers could screw you in originality?
That doesn't sound right. They should be worth something right?

    James,
I'm not following your train of thought. Dealers do all kinds of things that are not original but done either by customer request, or for profit (exactly how are they "screwing" you? You don't have to buy the car that way, and you can always change it back). Elaborate stereo systems, alarms, cell phones (those big jobs were common in the late eighties), integrated radar detectors, etc. People don't really worry that much about originality to that much extent with most V8 cars...the production numbers are quite large. The mesh wheels are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them...but by and large, not much. With tires, they may be worth $800 or so in excellent condition (this is typical of what the factory 14" wheels sell for used, the metric ones even less). There is really little demand for those BBS wheels as they really scream "eighties", and date the car. The 16" factory QV wheels is another story. They are always in high demand, and being factory oem, and made of magnesium, are very popular. They typically sell for $2400 to $3000 in excellent condition.

If they are not in the parts book - they were not an option.

I got a BBS set like that with my last '77.....

I'm gonna clean and paint them some color besides gold and use 'em for track slicks or something...............

You just can't have too many spare sets of wheels/tires in your girlfriend's garage, IMO

FYI, one of the "period" pieces--magazine article of the day--that I have shows the 308 being road tested, and it has the BBS rims. It was like a 76-80 road and track or something--I'll have a look when I get back home. Just for what it's worth ya know--brand new car road tested had the BBS rims. So did my old 1980 BMW 633! They're were definitely the BLING of the late 70s / early 80s.

I'm thinking a contrasting color would look nice..on the wheels..

Or, basic black goes with EVERYTHING!

Michael, that article is in the link posted above in this thread, and referrenced. See my comments on it. The main issue is the article did not specify that it was truly an "option" only that the wheels were provided by "intermag". Also this car was not provided by the importer, it in fact was a "euro" spec car, and provided by an individual, so who is to say how the wheels ended up on the car?

To the best of my knowledge the 308's never ever came with the BBS wheels as a factory option although I know that many dealers sold them as an upgrade when buying the car new. Kinda like a Tubi exhaust today or Speedline wheels.

Thanks! But I've DONE that one! lol

This fine lady is jus' putting her wings over me afterwards, so the rain doesn't get me so wet!! ;)

As I rebuilt my workshop into her garage, and rehung my tools on the new pegboard, I told her:

"The day I don't return home from the mission, baby...this is all yours!"

Her ex didn't even leave her with a screwdriver, so now I'm the Man!

We are prepping BOTH 308s for the Pirelli Classic, so you'll meet her soon...!

What color should I paint the BBS basket weaves? on a blue metallic car?

Body color? Silver? The gold has definately got to go....I was thinking bright orange, to get the historical Gulf Oil thing goin' on.......
