I’m curious to know why the Factory chose to run a separate hot water circuit to the front of the car instead of just tapping off of the main hot coolant pipe at the front? Why not reduce hassle/complexity and save a few pounds? Surly the temperature of the two possible sources must be about the same?

I am curious to know why they did a lot of things. Water for the heater is pretty low on the list.

It's a simple answer though. The circuit is closed until the engine is up to temp. So the heater would not function until the T'stat opens. The return line is up front though.
Feeding right from the cylinder head means less wait time.

I have considered re-designing the system to eliminate the second line, but smg2 has a good point. Not sure the wait time is a problem.

The other issue is that 'feed' line to the rad only flows when the stat opens... That'll make for odd flow into the heater cores.
