I'm trying to track down an "binding" issue with the passenger side power window on a 1982 308. The window lift motor is new, although I did not install it. It was professionally installed in 2000 and the car has not been driven much since.

I assume the motor was installed because of the same binding issue. Here's what it does: During the down cycle, the window shutters to a stop and needs assistance (by hand) to go back to top. I took the door panel off and lubed all pulley wheels and cables. This caused a slight speed increase along with the ability to close without assistance. But it still stops and binds at the same place.

I loosened the cables and can move the window up and down by hand without any binding at all. Does anyone have any thoughts?

perhaps cables have slipped on the spool and are binding?

I assume you mean that your window always stops halfway down. Right?
Maybe, the window isn't attached to the cable at the right position so that the spool reaches the end before the window is completly down. However, I would expect people to check for correct movement of the window after installing the new window motor.
If your cable hasn't been properly installed, I mean with the wrong orientation at the two cable crossing points, movement of the window can also be blocked halfway. This happened to me when I overhauled my electric window. The result was that the window stopped halfway up until I changed the orientation of the cable.
A third more speculative explanation might be that the metal stop plate at the left mounting point of the window points into the wrong direction and probably "grabs" the cable or something else on its way down.

    Good luck!

Lube the tracks with silicone spray. Also, search the threads on this subject. Someone came up with the idea of floating the pulley adjuster using a spring to keep a slight tension on the cable. Also, do not lube the cables, this will attract dirt and cause the system to bind.

Sounds like your window channels aren't paralell to each other.

Don't rule out that while the motor was changed, the gear drive (aka regulator) wasn't changed, and may not have been cleaned & re-lubed.

Often people have changed the motors w/o any benefit, & got a dramatic improvement after cleaning & relubeing the regulator mechanism. See this thread:

It also has the 'spring tension' mod referred to earlier.
