It appears I am in need of an AC clutch for my 1983 308 GTSi QV as I have been told by a local AC repair shop that mine is not rebuildable. The fiction surface is damaged. So far I cannot find a replacement. Any suggestions?

    Thank you.

Buy a complete broken Ferrari 308 York compressor unit with clutch on Ebay or from a scrap yard perhaps

Yes, I'm checking eBay daily but so far nothing. Ferrari of Tacoma wants about $1,000 for a new one. John Swanner at Maranello Auto Parts says he's getting some rebuilts back in about 3-4 weeks. I guess I'll have to wait for them.

I had the same problem on my 85 308gtsi Qv and my mechanic was able to get a used one. Some new parts for the 308"s are getting hard to find, so we have to resort to used parts. Mine is working great with the used one. Monaco Motors in Canoga Park ask for Wade.

Thanks Pat. I'll contact them. Are you a club member or something? I'm located in Mar Vista W.L.A. and may want to join someplace to access events, drives and tracks for fun.

I just enjoy my 308gtsi and 911 Porsche Carrera. I would like to join in on some events. I do go on the 3rd and 4th Sundays to Islands at Valley Circle Dr. and the 101 in Woodland Hills. Lots of nice cars and great people. I would like to meet other Ferrari owners.

The clutches/pulleys are Ferrari specific; could you have the clutch surfaces resurfaced at a machine shop?

I was able to locate a BRAND NEW AC clutch through Lyle Tanner in Sacramento, CA. Their computer showed one available from Italy IN STOCK!?! My order is locked in, I'm crossing my fingers it is not a missprint.

Thanks to everyone for your assistance

Hi Bob! Were you able to get a new A/C clutch? Let's take the 308"s out for a drive sometime.

AC problems in a 308 GTSI? I thought all you had to do was put the top behind the seat. My top has only been on twice, both times when it was on a trailer

Talking about a/c clutches. Can you tell me the dia. of your clutch and the thickness of the belt used. I am trying to fit a missing unit to my 308.
    Thanks

The early single groove 308 clutches are a Ferrari only application...

I have an aftermarket attempt at fitment but have not attempted to install it......no news yet....

From Ferrari it's an expensive item....

Welcome Kenneth, sorry for that news!!! LOL!

They DO pop up on eBay from time to time, as noted the York compressore is the same as many Pcars and easy to find......

Hi Ken, I still have my car at the shop so I can't give you the size details. I do know that It's a "standard" York compressor but that the clutch pully and magnet were designed to ONLY fit the 308 Ferrari. NO other "generic" clutches will work because it is a single belt pully and the whole unit faces the engine, rather than away like on "normal" cars. Very tight space conditions. The York compressor (rebuilt) is relatively easy to get almost anywhere. The problem is going to be a new clutch/mag unit if yours is not good. I was able to get a perfect clutch/mag replacement through Lyle Tanner Enterprises - A.K.A. Ferrari Parts Exchange, in Sacramento, CA. Ask for Judie Tanner - excellent customer service person. 916-454-3240 or email her at [email protected]

A second option would be to check with John Swanner at Maranello Auto Parts in Atlanta Ga. He told me he was getting some units rebuilt for resale but I could not wait. See my earlier post in this thread.

    Hope that helps.

    Ken,

FYI - I spent about $900 on the York unit plus another $400 on the Clutch/Mag assembly, both exact Ferrari fits.

You must have had a money suit on because I paid $150 for my York compressor and used my old clutch assembly.

It was a major tragedy when my unit, in for a reed kit was 'mistakenly' thrown away!

There is a York single groove clutch we found for a tractor application, no idea if it work though as stated above....

The prices included installation while they were doing other items such as fuel line replacement and converting the system to #134.

My clutch's friction material was worn off due to a frozen compressor and I was told not easily (or quickly) re-surfacable. So we opted to get (and found!) a new old stock complete OEM pully and magnet unit in Italy ($300+ SH & tax for the parts). I'm keping all the replaced parts too.

Granted AC in Southern California is not critical. But my intent in all this is to get my car back to original stock condition/operation because that's the way I like my cars to be kept. No Mickey Mousing or band-aid 'ing . Personal choice I guess.

    Regards....

Is there a specific reason why you can't use some other clutch. If you can convert to a Sanden or sankyo compressor with their clutches whay can't you get another York type clutch . I know that there are a lot of York compressors with single groove pullies on them. So what is the difference? Just asking

Yes, I'm getting to find out more about this part day by day. If there is a swap part replacement out there, no one has come up with one to me. I've been told by my shop (my older son works there so I do trust them), through two of their suppliers, that this car's single groove clutch was commissioned to York by Ferrari to be specifically designed to fit the GT4/308/328 V-8 configuration exclusively (lucky us). While the York compressor itself is a more generic off the shelf unit, this clutch's overall thickness (pulley and magnet) is very thin to accommodate the close quarters required of the unit's placement. As you may know, the clutch's pulley FACES the engine block's right end, rather than away as most normal GM/Ford offerings did back then.Hope that helps.

We just found out the expansion valve's capillary was cut (under the console) by some previous owner/mechanic. Now we have to track one of those things down (see my other recent thread).

    Regards........
