Does anyone have any info on where i could get a replacement altenator at a fair price.. Thanks Mario
Replacements run $400 & up with a large core deposit. The alternator is made by BOSCH, can be rebuilt by any shop that rebuilds Mercedes, BMW, etc. BOSCH alternators, usually you'll get a bit of a capacity upgrade in the process. Rebuilds usually run $125 - $250 depending on labor costs where the shop is, & what needs replacing. The alternator case has a polished Al finish. Most shops degrease/clean the cases by tumbiling in a solvent mix with chunks of Al. It leaves a sand-blasted finish. If you want to keep your stock finish, make it clear up front & ask them to hand wash it. Most shops are used to the vintage Corvette crowd requesting this kind of service & will gladly provide it. BTW, you could have found this out by searching Tech Q&A for 'Alternator'
Find an automotive electric shop to diagnose the problem. A local shop here in the panhandle of Florida replaced my voltage regulator for $49.95 and she is good as new. If there is a suitable modern-day replacement alternator available, it would be nice to have plan "B" though...
I had the alternators on my BB512i rebuilt at a local auto electric shop for $150.00 each...the BB512i has two..
Question - does the 328 have a higher-Amp alternator, and would it be wise to upgrade a 308 alternator with a 328 unit? What are the part numbers/AMP ratings of each?
It's not a huge difference: 328 spec = 85A vs 308QV spec = 80A so I'd say "interchangeable" rather than "upgrade" (and the single-belt 308QV has enough trouble driving the 80A)
Mar308: You should fill out your profile so we know what are you live in. There is a guy in Orange, Ca who rebuilds them for about $100. Mark
