After taking the car out for a fairly long run the other day on the way home the alternator light came on. Managed to get home but the battery was too flat to start the car again. The light didn't just come on straight away but came off and on for a while first with varying brightness but now it's just on all the time. I don't suppose anyone knows of any regular faults with these? Any loose connections that often come off? Looks like a fun job trying to get the alternator off if it's not a cable off!
    Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers

Usually when the light goes on you have busted your waterpump belt and teh alternator just stops turning--I do hope you did not do that as you may have cooked your motor good--
If , however< it is actually a bad alternator it is not hard to get at--search some old posts on here and you will find a ton of info

Disconnect alternator harness at the starter motor, remove front coolant pipe , remove drive belts, remove harmonic balancer, remove the (2) 17mm wrench nuts that hold the alternator pivot base to the engine block, remove pivot base-alternator-harness as assembly.

Mine did that back in 97. Turned out it wasn't the alt. but instead the regulator brushes were shot. It wasn't a big deal to pop a new reg on the unit.

I have removed 308 alt. many times and never once had to remove the crank pulley. Leave it on there. I even cleared the coolant pipe. It is fairly tight but not that tight.

Thanks for the info. The water temp stayed stable and the belts are all ok, so I'll try to get the alt. off. Had a quick look under the car today... does look a bit tight!
    Cheers
