Has anyone ever replaced a cam belt one tooth out? I recently replaced the cam belts and find that the engine under load at 2,500 rpm and above gives a metallic clatter. I am wondering if I have fitted one of the belts a tooth out. I would be interested to know if anyone has had a similar experience before I strip it to check.

My understanding is that one tooth out is curtains!

One tooth on the cam pulley is 12 degrees or 24 crank degrees. Do a compression test to see which head has to come off (maybe you are lucky and it's the rear head.) If compression is good it might be something else-- run bearing, piston slap etc. How is your oil pressure? How do your plugs look, any smoke? Good luck

I'd put some effort into ruling out an exhaust leak or V-belt noises (as both of these can have a surprisingly "metallic" sound) before resorting to removing the camcovers - JMO.

Do you have the backside timing belt covers in place? I know on later models, they added some rough timing marks to help diagnose a skipped tooth without needing any disassembly, but don't know if that was introduced on euro 308QV.

PS "Mondial 308QV" -- are you just trying to confuse us, or do you mean "Mondial8 and 308QV"? ;)

QV had huge valve to valve and valve to piston clearance. Needs to be far more than a tooth out for problems. 2v motors had bigger valves, more lift and taller pistons and even they don't hit until they are far more than a tooth out.

2500 to 4500 the motors vibrate so anything loose will make noise. Also the 1-4 belt covers crack around the upper mounting bolt and they make a terrible noise in that RPM range. The A/C hoses up and over the fuel tank have a very real reputation of making noise in the 4000-4500 rpm range if not angled correctly.

Valves hitting pistons make a noise for a few nano seconds until they are bent out of the way unless they just break off in which case it usually stops the engine. Once bent out of the way it runs bad and sounds like a few valves are very far out of adjustment.

Thanks, Rifle. Good to know about the teeth. Of course I have a 1980 2vi and even after all my precautions, I was scared to death to turn the key after I relaced belts. Ran perfect! It was my first time...ahhhh...I was so innocent back then :)

Your not alone on that one. Every time I have replaced belts I had a plug wire or two not properly seated...........that makes your heart pump!!!!!

If you have marked your belts and cams, getting 1 + teeth off would be pretty difficult. especially if you are willing to turn 12 or 16 ( I can't remember but it is exhausting) revolutions to line up all marks again.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions. I took the car to The Ferrari Centre in Maidstone Kent today. Roger test drove the car, removed the airbox and found one of the belt cover bolts was loose. Tightened it and all good in about 15 minutes!! No charge. Many thanks to The Ferrari Centre
