    Hi,

I'm not very technical so may not know what all the right terms / parts are, but here goes..

My 85 308 QV has the last few months been cutting out when hot, when coming to a stop. The engine starts first time when cold, and is fine until it gets hot, (this happens quicker on a hot day, but generally at least 20 mins or so of driving before it happens). Then if I slow down to a stop, as I put the clutch in the revs drop too far / too fast, and it stalls before it starts idling. Generally it starts again first time, sometimes it repeats the process once. It seems fairly intermittent, it will do it 3 traffic lights in a row then be fine for a while.

I thought of doing a quick fix by shortening / tightening the throttle cable, at the engine end, so it acts like a foot on the accelerator pedal, and doesn't let the revs drop enough to stall, but think this will just ignore the root cause of the problem.

My mechanic said the last time it was in for a service a few months ago that it probably needs new injectors (it has 28 k miles on it in 20 years) - would this help? Also I was thinking if there is an automatic choke (cold start valve??), perhaps this is preventing the problem occurring when the car is cold.

I will probably have the injectors replaced in the next month or two, but was just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar problems.

    Dave

Dave -- Can you describe the "version/set-up" of your 308QV -- does it have an O2 sensor (K-Jet with Lambda) or not (K-Jet without Lambda)?

It's a KJet with no lambda sensor - it's a Euro version with no catalytic converter.

My euro QV did the same thing as yours. After a fuel pressure test failed, the culprit was the warm-up regulator.

My injectors are also original with over 50K miles on them. Seem to be working fine right now.

So- first thing- do a complete fuel pressure test and see what your mechanic finds out.

BTW, when my car would die at a stop sign, it would not fire back up without a little throttle input.

Understood Dave, but then I can't add anything beyond jwise's advice (the beautiful thing about K-Jet without Lambda is that there are virtually no electric gizmos involved in the warm-running mode ;)).

I wouldn't be hopeful that a set of fresh injectors would solve the problem (i.e., one or two might have an intermittent problem -- but not a majority synchronized together). Still, it wouldn't be unreasonable IMO to put in a fresh (brass) set if it can done at reasonable cost (and you've got the earlier steel ones now).

Thanks for your suggestions Jwise and 91TR. It was also something I was thinking that the injectors are unlikely to all become problematic at once. Also had another chat to my mechanic, he reckons I should see if the problem is more pronounced with the aircon on, it may be drawing too much power and causing a stall if there is no throttle imput. I will also ask them to do the fuel pressure test, so I am sure we will find the problem. I will probably test the injectors anyway and replace where necessary. For a complete set its about a $500 job through my mechanic as opposed to a $1400 job through the agents! Someone else in our club also with a 308 QV says he cannot believe the difference in power and response with new injectors.

    cheers
    Dave.

Your symptoms are typical of a K-Jet system that is running too rich - the cause of the richness could be any number of things; injectors, WUR, cold start system not shutting off, basic mixture too rich, etc.
