I have done a search on this site and have come up with what I consider to be very limited debate on preferred engine oils. In researching preferred oils for my newly acquired 84 911, there are volumes of threads on Rennlist and Pelican Parts debating this issue. I ended up going with Valvoline VR-1 20W50 racing oil in the 911 as it appeared to have the highest ZDDP numbers which are recommended for older engines. Now I am getting ready to do an oil change on the 308 and am leaning toward the same VR-1 oil for it. Previously I only used Catrol GTX 20W50. I'd be interested to get feedback from fellow 308 QV owners as to their preferred oil.

    Thanks

I use 10/40 as 10/50 is almost impossible to find. I only use synthetic and I'm not loyal to any brand, but I'm not buying an off brand to save a few bucks. I have seen no problems in both hot and cold weather. I use Baldwin filters and have never had to pay over $12.00.

Won't synthetics leak right thru the castings on an old Ferrari engine, leaving it all on the floor overnight?

For those of you searching for a 10w/50. Total Quartz racing makes a 10w-50 and it is pretty good stuff, and it comes in a neato bottle. I have been using it for about 7 months now due to the changes Shell Rotella T 5/40 went through.

    I do add ZDDP however.

I got Redline 10W 40. Speaking with the Redline rep, he says that they can provide 10W50 if anyone insists on sticking to the original spec.

i have been using Red Line or Royal Purple 10-40 in my 3.2 911 Carreras, and several of the 308s i have had in the last 3 years or so. 20-50 is too darn thick. i add BG MOA to have the ZDDP covered. i put less than 3000 miles a year on my cars, and only keep them a year or so. all of them revved easier and run cooler with the thinner oil. all of the cars had great oil pressure, even in the hot Georgia summer.

no way will i run 20/50 anymore.
