Hello all, So, after driving my new 83 Euro QV this weekend, the car is now keeping a high idle (2k rpm), I have to work the clutch at stop sighns to keep the idle noise down!!.....has this happened to anyone? It was intermittant but now after warm up it's doing this constantly!!!....can anyone give me a clue on this???....thanks Joey
First make sure it isn't the carpet pushing your accelerator pedal, or a sticky throttle cable/throttle body. Those are very easy to correct. If the problem goes deeper into the injection system, we may be in the same boat since I'm still chasing gremlins with a high idle and rich mixture in my injection system on an 84 Euro QV.
Mine did that one time when a vacuum line was left of the cold start valve. Right side of engine. Looks like a around gold ball. Near top of forward timing cover.
I messed around with my cold start idle system a couple of months ago and can confirm that the '83 QV requires a vacuum on the cold start high idle valve to close it (i.e. let the idle drop back down). If its not your carpet, check the cold start idle valve and it's vacuum lines. I never confirmed it, but I had read somewhere that only the U.S. QV got the high idle valve and its only purpose is to heat the engine a little bit more quickly to reduce cold start emissions. Some people completely remove or disable the valve. The easiest reversable way to disable it is by connecting its vacuum hose directly to the intake plenum.
One other thing -- my fuel pump relay was jumpered by a previous owner. Replacing the jumper with the relay made the idle perform much more predictably.
I don't think there exists a 308 owner who hasn't had the issue. Floor mats tend to scoot forward when you get in and out of the car unless they're very securely fastened down, and can wiggle around a bit more during driving. All correct, so there shouldn't be a cold start valve on a Euro car.
